A Princess Enthroned

Masks We Wear

In pursuit of success,

she earned everyone's respect.

Her goal was to be the very best, unmatched.

Unaware of richer, more fulfilling experiences

that have been around since the dawn of time.

She always fit in -

being a social wallflower has never been her curse.

Everyone admired her.

Wonderful wedding, lovely holiday.

She'd been to London, but forgot that with her sister

as her friends were completely unaware of her

hidden away, obscured by a thick fog.

Without her sister, she wouldn't be the person she is.

Their parents became narcissistic, self-absorbed,

establishing different rules,

raising their daughters uniquely,

in different eras.

They compared, judged, and scorned -

the elder, the misfit.

She observed all first-hand -

a psychologist in the making.

Raised without education, like weeds nourished by ignorance,

bitterness overflowed from the home -

a fortress built to serve parental desires.

This massive thing -

too much for them to handle.

-

To my mute sister
