A Poets Introduction

Poetry

Hello Vocal Media, it’s nice to be here—all the stories and the challenges are cool. I read and write poetry and there is plenty to read here. I’ve been writing poetry for about five maybe six years now. I will share many poems here—also share some of my favorite books and authors of poetry.

Poems are funny things. They can breathe emotion, suck you in and hold you—cradle you like a baby. They can be political and piss you off, be sexy and put you in the mood and it’s true what they say when writing them; every word counts, to write good poetry you need to read a lot of poetry. It’s not too much to ask, most are concise and don’t beat around the bush. You can draft a poem about anything and they're fun.

I think I’m drawn to poetry for the reasons above. I still work full time but can usually fit writing them or reading into my everyday. Once you get into this practice you notice things you may have never seen before. They will be always in your day, in your thoughts. I used to be an illustrator and graphic artist. What I like about poetry is, I can paint a picture no matter where I am with just words, and these words can stir up emotions, thoughts, and memories, no mater where I am—I wrote this one at lunch the other day:

Giggling Tomato’s

Sometimes I just think they laugh at me

Giggling Tomato’s —like young schoolgirls.

This year they matured and ripened,

I feel guilty plucking such beauty, but

then I think I could of just left them there

in the cold, to freeze and die feeling useless.

This winter I will eat well and, in the spring,

new rumours.

This poem I wrote by pure accident in one take—A rare incident but that is what makes it so much fun.

Talk again soon —Gerry!
