A Poem From Lilith

I am the brewing before the storm

I am the fear that the storm brings.

I.

Sometimes, long days

Balmy and grey

Storm clouds fill the sky

Hot droplets hang in the air

Will it rain already?

It feels stuck

It’s building up

At last, the rain bursts through

It falls fast, no holding back

Sharp, smack, all at once

The water drops relentlessly

The hasty flood rises

It’s getting higher now!

A declining deluge

Adrenaline rushes, panic ensues

Climb higher away, rest in fear

Your heartbeat throbs in your ears

It can consume you

By choice, but only for some

II.

Some

As they scramble to get to safety

Which may or may not exist

In a defenseless, panicked state

Their guard is down

The violent flood consumes them

That terrible thing you are running away from

Is bound to keep smashing into you

Or be like a snake

Slithering under the surface

Feeding on your fear

III.

Those who choose to go in

The suspense of jumping off the cliff

You climbed up, now catching your breath

Taking in the view

Needles in your stomach

Apprehensive pokes

You observe the feeling with curiosity

And it’s okay

Exhilarating

You are being seduced by your soul

There’s a burning in your heart and bones

You know what to do

You take the leap

IV.

The descent is quicker than anticipated

When you hit the water

It’s hard, like concrete

You’re plunged deep

Into the dark, cold water

The deepest depths of the ocean

Quiet

Unknown

Still

Frightening

Or is it?

You can get used to it

Like getting used to the temperature of the water after jumping in

It’s still scary

Vigilant terror

You observe the feeling with curiosity

And it’s okay

Your vision adjusts to the darkness

Is there something else here?

Asked with dread and excitement

Hope

You were sinking deeper, slowly

Now, you start to swim

Not up, but

To the left

Exploring with wide eyes and reverence

Those who came before you hold and guide you

When it's pitch black, when you can't see ahead

When the pressure tightens

Tendrils around your temples, feeling like you might burst

You sense their embrace and push

It's midnight, it's freezing

Your swim strokes getting stronger

A deep seated anger, repressed resentments

Injustice and pain

Moulding strife into a sword

Hidden power, now it's in front of you

Curiosity, wonder, excitement, awareness

Profound love

Unfathomable connectedness

All nourish you on your journey

Skulking through the night alongside shadows

There are others and there is a home

The rain falls freely here
