A Penny

Penny for your thoughts

A penny for your thoughts my dear,

A quarter for the brain,

A single cent for all the times I wanted to throw you away.

Ten dollars won’t destroy your youth,

But ten pounds may level your house.

Think about the words you say

Before learning to kill a mouse.

You take my hand,

And lead me on,

But whisper that it’s okay.

You curse his name and all he does,

But praise him on the day.

A penny for your thoughts my love,

A nickel for your heart,

You couldn’t sell me twenty dogs

And couldn’t buy a start.

So, stop where you are and pick up your claw,

You’ll need it where you are.

A penny for your thoughts I ask,

A dime here for your soul,

He will give you what you want,

But your needs will not be met.

When a beggar asks for dollar bills,

He gets rocks instead.

When he asks to do some work,

He gets happiness.

So, a penny for your thoughts my dear,

I don’t have anything more.

Walk away,

And love the day,

For heaven will come once more.
