A Peek Inside the Mind of an Overthinker

Who Just Wants Her Son to Have the Perfect Day

By Sandy GillmanPublished 5 months ago 1 min read
When even packing a daycare bag can send me into a spiral. Image: AI-generated.

The zipper grinds

as I open

his daycare bag.

Pack exactly

three changes of clothes,

as requested.

Hat’s in,

water bottle too.

Now the shoes…

What to do about the shoes?

The size 4s seem a little snug.

I’ve got the size 5s ready to go,

are they too big?

👟👟👟

I try to slip the 4s on,

and I’m really struggling.

But this happens to me every time

we buy shoes.

I can’t get one size on,

so, I go the next size up,

and then they’re falling off.

👟👟👟

I put the 5s on.

I hear the distinct ripping sound

of the Velcro as I tighten them.

I let him take a few steps.

They’re not falling off,

but does his walk seem

a little different?

👟👟👟

What should I do?

If the shoes aren’t right,

he’ll be uncomfortable.

It might ruin his day.

All he wants

is to run and play.

If I pack both pairs of shoes…

will they understand?

or will they think I’ve

gone completely mad?

👟👟👟

I think I’ll just pack the 5s.

He always comes home with

shoes full of sand anyway.

The sand might help

keep the shoes on…

Fun to put your experiences into poetry! It seems like forever ago since I had to deal with these issues. My two daughters are grown. I have two grandsons, but one is soon to be 13 and the other (3) lives far away.

  • Very cute poem… how did his day & shoes go?🤔🤗

  • You are such a good mom!!! I love how you write out your thoughts. You make it all so relatable!!!

Awe I just want to hug you. This was so cute. It was reasonable to think that they would assume that you were crazy with the two different size pair of shoes. Only because they themselves don’t think sometimes. So you won on that one. The sand helping the shoe to stay on, genius! 🤗♥️

  • I felt like I was reading about me, lol. Why are we like this 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
