Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones Deck Prompts - How do I distract myself?

Distraction

Action

workaholism

alcoholism

Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones Deck Prompts - This is fun and maybe painful topic.

Try writing about your distractions in the third person to enter a different angle on yourself: "Natalie watches for sales on cod liver oil, then buys too many bottles and watches how slowly one tablespoon a day finishes the bottle. She is also crazy about always having lots of toilet paper and never running out." (As the coronavirus pandemic unfolded, I learned that the toilet paper hang-up was prescient.)

In the first person I might be embarrassed to claim these things, but writing in the third person gives the space for these distractions to be rattled out of me.

We all have crazy distractions, especially to avoid writing or other activities that in truth we really want to do - running, painting, working out, even cleaning out our closet. Writing in the third person can loosen the joints and can be applied to any topic.

Stop the madness

Denise is a sad mess

~

It used to be she was mean

then she would clean, clean, clean

~

A great distraction is to take action

or not. Alcohol, drugs, food I can mention

can be a great distraction with out

much action, but it carries some clout

~

When getting out of hand, Denise

found recovery, and can still ignore peace

by keeping so busy, it is very distracting

she doesn't have to think about nothing

except all the things, the multi-tasking

~

She is a genius at. Retired and only tired

with PaDiF and trainings, is that retired

then there is writing a book and fitting

in some stained glass at Glass With Class

~

Then planning a fundraiser for May with a Lass

Daughter Joanna will be over on Tuesday

~

Wait, this isn't nonsense

it's making too much sense

time to end this distraction

and take some action

~

Wait I'm getting some traction

I can post this for nonsense

Now that makes sense

two birds with one stone

time to write a tome.

well, not a tome, rather about home.

I loved the poem. And I find your observations food for thought. I never thought consciously about how third person would allow for the most comfort. And then first person would be a step down. It happens that right now I'm trying to write a story in second person. I found that especially challenging. I suppose I can distance myself as easily as I could with third person, but I'm a little uncomfortable putting actions or words into 'your' mouth. Awesome when art causes you to reflect. ⚡💙⚡
