A Natural Remedy

sun on hair

Runner-Up in Light Breaks Water Challenge

The sun is all powerful-

And it strikes over and through the coarseness of my afro-

The burning star hovers over hair that bears the soul-

Warming something so simultaneously magical and natural-

That it perplexes others the more it expands-

The ball of fire brings radiance to the magnificent transformative enigma that is black hair-

The centerpiece of the solar system illuminates all things the world wants left in darkness-

-

The sun graced my fro and I smiled greater-

I loved myself more-

I pushed my shoulders back-

I tilted my head upward-

So the light of the world could irradiate my booming crown-

-

Then I turned 30-

And cut my hair-

Short short-

-

I wanted to know the sun differently-

Feel it closer-

-

I lost some height to my stature-

But the gravitational pulley of space-

Cradled my skull as it elevated it-

Bracing me-

Cloaking me-

Providing a glow over what I am laying bare-

The middle aged, yellow dwarf star ran its tendrils along my scalp-

Massaging an ease into my nervous system-

That wicks the sweat off my palms-

And quiets the thumping panic in my chest
