A Mother’s Morning

Monday Poem

By J.B. MillerPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

I woke up today to darkness outside.

With dread, shook my head-

Said, “nope,” but still sighed.

With a moan, with a groan

A long drawn tired sigh

Added in prayer for an additional layer.

It’s not much protection,

But guessed it would do.

Time to turn up the heat,

And make my first brew.

The silence is bliss

Soon to be broken.

One last sip of my tea,

the beasts must be woken.

Time to gird my loins and tighten my belt.

It didn’t matter; however, I felt.

Slide a smile on my face

Then head up with false grace.

“Good morning, it’s Monday.”

“Wake up,” I implore.

There’s school today,

Guess what? I’m ignored.

A huff, a grunt, a puff

My grumbles, unheard.

If it were Saturday, they’d be up

Honestly, it’s absurd.

Come on, get ready!

Brush your teeth, let go!

Oh my God, we’re so late,

It’s twenty past eight!

Get in the car, get in the car!

No, you can’t take that to school.

I swear you’ll be grounded

Don’t you dare break the rules!

Finally, they’re gone; off to class.

Deep breaths- such relief,

a new cup of tea in my hand.

True joy, only parents understand.
