A Misunderstanding

Watch out for smooth words

I heard what was said

it's just

it didn’t sound like what was meant.

It sounded

heady as honeysuckle set against pink and mauve evening skies

like fresh mown grass on warmed damp earth

with sweet garden strawberries under the highest blue sky

and cool green shade on a scorching summer’s day.

Entirely idyllic.

Which with retrospect should have been the clue

I should have remembered also

the streaming eyes

and heavy head of pollen sickness

that wasps are drawn to sticky sweetness

and that your bones will chill if you spend all your time in the shade

sad poetry
