A memory worthy from summer's play
In a sonnet told this day
Summer months from December for three
Closed off each year with rain and sunshine.
Christmas Day spent outside by the sea
Or in yards playing under clotheslines.
Cousins laughing and groaning to wash
The plates piling high and bowls licked clean.
Wrapping on floors forgotten and squashed.
The football comes out! We all are so keen
To kick and to tackle, to play and fall down
Over lines drawn on grass made greener by rain.
To stomp and to fly, to smile and to frown
With every try scored and tackle restrained.
Days from this summer with my cousins and me
Laughing and playing as children should be.
