A letter to my father

A poem describing her fate after marriage

By Samantha Wilcox Published 2 years ago 1 min read

Dear Father,

I hope this reaches you in good health,

For fear of my husband makes me write in stealth,

Oh if I heeded your prayer!

For my beauty serves as a betrayer,

And love a blinding light,

That hid all my husband’s mischief from sight.

A man once beautiful turned vicious,

Every little misdoing of mine is gracious,

Forgive me for eloping with him,

For he promised a better life not such grim,

The sweet nothings once whispered are gone,

Leaving a beast to roam and run.

I plan to leave him soon,

Thankfully, we have no children to groom

For I would not be able to abandon them,

No matter how vicious the torment.

But oh if I heeded your prayer!

Marriage and love may have come later.

I hope I get to see you alive and well,

Since you’re always in a busy spell.

I’ve begun packing my bags,

Most of the expensive clothes once bought turned rags.

See you soon my father,

Send my regards to my brother.

Your daughter,
