A Late Summer Day

It is warmer than what I prefer, my tin can of a house having no air conditioning. But I do like all the windows being open, the breeze cooling the indoor air.

Birds sing or squawk their many songs to us throughout the day, often starting at the break of dawn.

I watch the different plants in the garden grow and bear their fruit, flowers, and leaves.

Blackberries ripen on their vines, and spiders weave their webs in inconvenient spots.

I often walk into them or tear the silk with my hand as I pick tomatoes or blackberries.

Basil sprouts in the greenhouse, while the other herbs have homes outside by the house or in the backyard.

The grass grows fast in spite of the heat. And various weeds pop out of the uneven ground overnight.

The day is slightly shorter than the last, in contrast to springtime.

It reminds us that autumn draws closer with each passing day, whether or not we want it to.
