If I could, I would live
My life in a jar of glass
Kept far away from
All the unfairness, atrocities,
And sadness that infuse
Each earthly day's existence.
If I could, I would live
My life in a jar of glass
With a multitude of loving,
Nonjudgmental, furry creatures
To fill the loneliness
Of my subsistence.
If I could, I would live
My life in a jar of glass
Surrounded by the powerful
Beauty of art and music,
Allowing it to fill the void
Of my silent, uneventful days.
If I could, I would live
My life in a jar of glass
Filled with lights and flowers
And all those whom I hold dear,
Keeping us far from unfair, wayward
Thoughts and devious ways.
If I could, I would live
My life in a jar of glass.
But since life forbids
Such submergence into hiding,
I will instead live each day of my life
Full of all that is to me duly given.
And in my every day
Meager existence, I will treat
All those that I encounter
As if they are as dear and fragile
As that imaginary jar of glass
Toward which I am so driven.
