A Falling Out

An Ekphrastic Sonnet for Mike Singleton

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read
Vincent van Gogh, "Autumn Landscape with Four Trees" 1885

Autumn has blessed this ravishing trio

Kissed their leaves with lips of crimson fire

Turned their green chlorophyl to rich Barolo

Letting their scarlet tongues now conspire

To exclude me, the gnarled and naked one

With whom time has refused to be gentle

Its war against my leaves has now been won

Leaving me white and arid as a skull

They whisper now, about my ugliness

Rustling with regal, red ridicule

Gossiping about my lack of finesse

But my courage makes them seem miniscule

Autumn reveals nature's ivory keys

Her music, played on me, will them displease
