I dreamt, I dreamt, the strangest of dreams.

Two foxes meet on a London street,

Full of confidence, supreme.

Consuming a carton of fried chicken, complete

With sauce a plenty, for to savour their meat.

I dreamt, I dreamt, of foxes cunning,

Sunning themselves on a railroad bank.

Taking it slow on a balmy day,

On their way to their rural retreat,

Away from bustle, hustle and urban heat.

I dreamt, I dreamt, of a fearful deception:

A poor fox, victim of cruel misdirection,

Ferocious fangs of a force of fierce foxhounds.

Running and hiding he cannot evade

The pack of gruff hunters. Killers, all, made.

This is the story of the Town Fox and the Country Fox, a tale I dreamt up while on a weekend stay in a Knightsbridge (London) hotel with a lady. On the street outside this boutique inn, I saw two foxes eating a discarded takeaway and wondered what they might be saying to each other. My first entry to the Vocal Legends Rewritten challenge. Foxes in the street and eating trash would be quite an odd sight in my neck of the woods! (Kentucky) But I suppose we've got enough forest areas for them to keep to. I liked the thread of rhyme in this and the repetition of "I dreamt" along with the bizarre imagery made for quite a surreal reading experience.

I can't say that I like foxes however, I enjoyed your story. I indeed wonder what the two foxes were saying to each other, The mystery of animals in general and wild animals even have a greater mystery. Nicely written.

  • I don't know how I missed that fox story before! I'm so glad you linked it here, I just read it. Loved your poem!

Inspiration can come from anywhere! I loved your poem, Ray, but felt bad for the town fox outside his comfort zone. Seems like he got the worst of that bargain. Should’a stayed in town with the heat and the fried chicken!
