A Clock is a Circle for a Reason, You Know?

For when you need to let go

What is today but memories

Of futures yet to come

And songs we sing today

Forgotten tunes our children hum

Fires burning steady now

Will bank then smoke and die

And art awaiting thoughtful gaze

Will fade from waiting eyes

The days that pass now

Are yet gone

As they come to us

And problems right now

Will be done

Over before they must

What is the past but overused

To make the future real

To make us look and see and think

And sometimes make us feel

Although we take and take from it

(And to the future give)

We never really learn from it

What all we need to live

So in the end, middle and start

Take these words I’ve learned

Engrave them down into your heart

And try to think them earned

For everything comes with a cost

And it’s now you’ll be paying

Lingering in all the past you’ve lost

Leaves your future decaying.
