A Better New Year?

The ball over Times Square did drop

The calendar to a new number turned

Soon in the seat Donald shall plop

The orange man who was not spurned

……

Full time jobs are hard to find

So bills stack up

But never you mind

There are soup kitchens at which to sup

…..

Ukraine still burning

Putin still sputtering

World sends warning

But Russia keeps puttering

…..

Here in US a wall shall be built

To keep wannabes out

We’ll keep our watch to south

Until China may shout

…..

Our young think the universe

It owes them a free and happy living

Put on brakes and go into reverse

The old are tired of freely giving

…..

Bombs still drop in Middle East

Cancer still insidiously kills kids

Meanwhile rich people uncaring do feast

While the FDA takes their bribes and bids

…..

The electric car should be prevalent

But we just keep polluting the atmosphere

Thinking in hubris it’s not relevant

After all, just our grandkids need fear

…..

Society has gotten more tolerant

But it’s shoved down our throat

By those who think a world parliament

Owes them special consideration at vote

…..

Tolerance is becoming the law of the land

Which seems a positive thing

But it’s forced across that line in the sand

And shouted so loud our ears do ring

…..

I can pray we all learn to get along

Live and let love as we truly should

But that’s an old tired song

Which we can still sing if we would

…..

Still, times they are indeed changing

Grinding slowly as is wont to do

While special interest groups keep banging

PinHoles into our long entrenched world view

…..

I truly wish I could honestly say

Things will be much better this new year

But there’s still too much intolerance and hate

So I’m afraid I think we’ve much to fear

…..

But I’ll do my part to try to improve

At least my little part of the world

If we all tried to it would indeed behoove

Earth not into nuclear fire to be hurled

…..

So with hopeful eyes let’s all look forward

To a more kind society this year

One that can link hands and move toward

Peace, equality and tolerance instead of fear

…..

But… unfortunately… I doubt it

Sorry 2025 for my skeptical view

Please prove me wrong and not fall into a pit

While I work at feeding the animals in my zoo
