when I was seven
the eye doctor told me
I was far-sighted handing me
a pair of thick-lensed
glasses he said
“If the world were flat
you could see all the
way to the Eiffel Tower”
but the world is round and
I’ve never been to Paris
when I was seventeen
someone told me I saw
life through rose-colored
glasses but after a while
the thorns began to dig
into my temples
at twenty-four I am tired
of glasses I will rely only
on my own eyes and maybe
then I can see past the
Eiffel Tower maybe I can see
all the way to the moon
