17 Highkus for Haiway 17

An Ode to my Commute

17 Highkus for Haiway 17

1

17 haikus

For my demanding mistress

My beauty, my bitch

2

Turn off the music

Listen to your own heart beat

The slow lane is fine

3

Cresting the summit

Islands float in a white sea

Heaven on 17

4

Lake Lexington looms

Peeking through a veil of mist

Scullers glide like ghosts

5

Smog hides the hillsides

The Valley of Heart’s Delight

One more work day waits

6

Better move over

Fire truck splitting the lane

This’ll take awhile

7

Cornered way too fast

An Escalade on its back

Speed makes us all slow

8

Flare smoke for incense

A plastic bag for a pall

What a place to die!

9

The red Ferrarri

Is just as slow in traffic

As my Corolla

1O

Cut banks in Autumn

Are draped with bright red streamers

Pretty poison oak

11

In rutting season

Deer corpses stain the shoulders

Poor shmoes died for sex

12

Cars slow – eyes widen

Commuters become children --

Snow at the summit

13

French Broom gilds the hills

Delicate yellow blossoms --

Invasive species

14

There’s that car again

License reads “KINKY RN”

What’s the deal with that?

15

Pride of Madeira

Clings to the hillsides, twisting

Desperately for sun

16

Sweltering all day

I long for fog – Santa Cruz

Air conditioning

17

My first glimpse of home

Brown hills cradle a blue bay --

Pasatiempo

Haiku
