This Grand Old House

This Grand Old House in the photo was my very first home as a married women. It was the beginning of a life, that I would lead good or bad that would span over a period of five decades.

This house was an historic house in Delaware, and should have been protected. However, like anything else, perhaps the upkeep to preserve it and fix it up, was just to much for the state and now it is gone. Torn down, now history is only preserved in the hearts and memories of the town that once remembers it, and the people who lived there.

I moved in the Grand Old House, after I married my first husband. I was in nursing school at the time, and this was my first home of my own, as a grown adult and also as a married adult. My ex-husband moved in it before our wedding, because he was anxious to move out of the military barracks on the Air Base.

Where I Lived

If you face the photo I posted, on the right hand side, there is a porch, and above that porch are green shutters, and that was our upstairs apartment. I can remember looking out those windows, and thinking, I made it. The world as I saw it looked differently, for now I would no longer be looking after my Mother after her divorce, but I would be concentrating on building a life of my own.

It was from that upstair window, that dreams were made, fantasies danced around in my head, and plans were made for a future that was just mine. The possibilities were endless, and the dreams were made of cotton candy and sugar cane, and it always put a smile on my face.

Your First House

Your first home of your own as an adult, whether it is a camper, or a tent or a mobile home or a Grand Old House, are where dreams are made. Some will come true, some will shatter, some will turn into disaster, but all the same this is where your dreams were first made. It is where your future life will be formed and it is where all the memories for the dreams fullfilled and failed were first discovered.

This Grand Old House Was Filled With Firsts

Yes it was, and for me it was also filled with memories I will take with me far beyond this life time.

I got married the first time in July and it was a hot steamy day. I went to this house directly from my Mothers house which we had cake and ice cream for the attending guests, that were very few.

So part of that July was the first holiday, I spent in my own home. Then came Labor Day, and then came Thansgiving and I cooked my first Thanksgiving turkey, in the Grand Old Home, while my Mother went and ate at my sisters. It was so new and such a beautiful experience, and it was mine - it was all mine to enjoy.

My First Christmas In My New Home

The Grand Old House, had many firsts, the second most memorable was my first Christmas. I got to decorate my own home with meager means. I remember going through the Christmas cards I recieved and taping them to a string, and hanging them across the window sill for decoration. I also remember going into the woods to cut holly and hanging that from the staircase, because we lived in an upstairs apartment.

This was Chrismtas on a budget, and my ex-husband went out into the woods of a friend, and literally cut down a Pine Tree with permission of course, and then we had our Christmas tree.

But None Were More Memorable

Absolutely, none were no more memorable, than bringing my first born son and first child home from the hospital to this Grand Old House. This was the first home for my son, and the first home that I was a mother, and so many memories were made from that experience.

I Used To Do A Drive By

I used to do a drive by of that Grand Old House, and things have changed since I moved out that great old home. Moving into that house was over five decades ago. The home is no longer there, and the area is no longer the same as when I lived there over fifty years ago.

If Grand Old Homes Stood Forever

Oh the tales they would be able to tell. Time does not stand still, and building deteriorate.

HOWEVER, YOUR MEMORIES REMAIN YOURS FOREVER!!

This Grand Old House, just happens to be part of my memories that will remain in my heart forever. Memories I will take with me, far past my earthly journey.
