Don't Forget the Couple Shots During Family Sessions ❤️

Okay, let’s talk about something that gets overlooked way too often during family sessions: you two—the couple. The parents. The people who started this wild, beautiful chaos called “family.”

When I photograph families, yes, we go all in on the sibling shots, the full group photos, the individual portraits, and the occasional silly moment where someone’s mid-cartwheel or rolling in the grass (it happens, and it’s amazing). But I also make space for something a little quieter, a little softer, and just as important: a few photos of the grown-ups in love.

Why Couple Photos Matter in a Family Session

Let’s be real—once you have kids, pets, busy jobs, or just life happening at full speed, it becomes rare to have photos of just the two of you. Not ones where you’re squished into a selfie, or your heads are cropped weirdly by someone else’s “candid” attempt.

But here’s the thing:

You are the heart of the family.

You’ve built something beautiful together. You’ve weathered sleepless nights, school drop-offs, endless snack negotiations, and “Wait—was that today?” moments. That deserves to be celebrated in more than just holiday cards and blurry phone shots.

When I snap a few couple photos during a family session, it’s a moment to slow down. To breathe. To look at each other and maybe remember that spark—that “oh yeah, I still really like you” feeling. And that’s worth capturing.

You Don’t Have to Be ‘Romantic’ to Deserve Couple Photos

Let’s get this out of the way: couple photos during family sessions are not cheesy prom poses. I’m not going to ask you to dip your partner while fireworks go off behind you (unless you want that… in which case, let’s talk 😂).

These moments are natural, easy, and genuinely reflective of your connection. I might ask you to hold hands. Lean in. Whisper something ridiculous. Or just look at each other like you’re trying not to laugh.

The result?

Photos that feel like you—comfortable, loving, and real.

It’s Not a Separate Session—It’s Part of the Story

Some families assume you have to book a totally separate shoot to get couple photos, but that’s not true at all. I always carve out a few minutes during our family session to get those shots.

You won’t even have to leave the kids for long. While they explore, throw leaves in the air, or chase each other around the park, I’ll guide you through a couple of quick, relaxed moments together. It’s often when the magic happens—because you’re already in that loving, playful family energy.

And for blended families? These moments are especially powerful. You’re not just documenting the family you’ve created—you’re honoring the love that brought you all together. That deserves its own little spotlight, too.

Real Example, Real Love

In a recent session at a quiet park near a family’s home, I photographed a blended crew of parents, siblings, and step-siblings. We got all the classic combos: full group shots, solos, kids together, even goofy candids. But one of my favorite parts?

The quick moment I pulled the parents aside and had them snuggle up under a shady tree. They laughed. He kissed her temple. She smiled like she forgot the camera was there. Just a few minutes—but those photos ended up being some of the most cherished.

Don’t Let Years Go By Without a Photo Together

If you’ve been putting off family photos because they feel stressful or over-complicated, I promise—it doesn’t have to be that way. My sessions are short, sweet (often 30 minutes!), and totally chill. And yes, we’ll get those beautiful group photos. But we’ll also make time for you two.

Because your love isn’t just part of the story—it’s the beginning of it.

So next time you book a family session with me, know this:

I see you. I value the connection you share. And I’ll make sure you get a few moments to shine together, camera and all.
