Caught In The Moment, You Just Never Know...
Which One Will Change You Forever

Our bedtime song for the last 5 years, please enjoy

I took a few liberties with this challenge...forgive me
I take too many pictures...I have always been guilty of that, my kids, the sunrise, the sunset, the snow on a frosted berry as the sun peaks up behind the tree, random cows, the moon, the lake. The supply of potential shots is limitless, and well, with Grayson it is no different. In fact, I had a really difficult time choosing which pictures to share for this story, and limit myself to 3. Although, he steals the show in each one.
Ok, here we go.
This is Grayson Scott, the miracle I never knew I needed.
You don't even have to know him for that smile to take you over.
He is the incomparable fixer of broken things. And in his short 5 years, he has lovingly mended broken hearts, broken families and broken arms. He is a whopping 40 pound powerhouse of pure adventure, imagination and love.
It isn't hard to imagine the energy of a 5 year old boy, they are amped up adrenaline machines, powered by an untapped powersource we all wish we could bottle, and Grayson is no different. Except, he also has this innate ability to sense when someone needs him and his magical sensitivity. He is love itself, pure 100 percent, unadulterated compassion and hugs.
Now, for the record, Grayson is not mine...in fact, we are not related at all. Though he calls me mommy, it has become a term of endearment that he uses to describe the relationship we have. He has a mom, and he knows I am not her, but what we share is beyond the bounds of bloodline. See, our hearts were bonded the day we met, and they have blended and molded into this combination of emotion, way more than titles, and they beat together somehow, in unison. We are indescribably connected. And although we aren't together 24/7, that connection is sustained by our unique family dimension.
His father, my ex husband, has graciously allowed us to maintain this special bond and it has even extended into some extraordinarily unexpected relationships with my own kids. And let me tell you, Wynter and Nizhoni love him like their little brother and he loves them as his big sisters. He and Wynter even share the same birthday, though Wynter is 20 years older than he, they share some remarkable similarities. Maybe because they have both been with me through their formable years, or maybe because they are the same sign, or maybe it's just the magnetic way he loves. I don't know, but it is an unexpected blessing.
He has been everywhere with us and I am incredibly grateful to his dad for allowing us to be "family". We have traveled to New York, Chicago, Indianapolis and Michigan on countless adventures, including Cedar Point and the renaissance fair. Next week, he is taking yet another adventure with his daddy to Disney World, his first plane ride and trip to Florida, and his excitement has me looking forward to seeing all the pictures and memories he is making.
We, along with Grayson are learning the importance of the "village concept". It really does take a village and Grayson has taught and continues to teach us far more than we could ever teach him.
Grayson is a reminder to me that there is always good just waiting to be found in any situation, I just need to look for it and be open to the changes. Just being able to hear his little 5 year old voice wishing me sweet dreams and reminding me that he loves me touches my heart in ways I never imagined possible.
From jamming out to Imagine Dragons, "Wake up" and falling to sleep for the last 5 years to "End of May, by Michael Buble', I can't wait to see what other adventures Grayson brings to my world and every heart he touches with his magical smile.
Thank you sweet boy for the pleasure of you in my life.
Love, momma k

A beautiful story Kelli, thank you for sharing it. It is lovely to hear about situations that evolve, especially where children are involved, that they have no part in creating. You have something special with your extended family. The way it is written has all the charm and character of your poems - good job.
Kids are so great, what a special little guy.
Oh my, what a cutie. This is such a heartwarming story. I hope it places.

This is such a beautiful story! Grayson is so lucky to have so many people in his life who love him <3 Thank you for sharing and being an amazing "bonus" mom. So many people take the children in their lives for granted or worse. I'm so glad Grayson has a wonderful life, well done 👏
