Introduction to Mr. Brown’s Blog

The questions are numerous, diverse, and almost unending. Is one man’s life better because he sees the glass as half full? Is it important to plan for the day, the week, the year? If a man does what he wants and not what he must, will he be fulfilled? Is a man who wears a suit happier than the man who does not shave or concern himself with material things? If a young man knows what he wants to be does he use all his energy trying to attain the ideal? Again, the questions are numerous, diverse, and almost unending. To me, the answers to any of the questions that arise from this reading do not matter. All that matters is what does this reading make you think, what does it make you feel? I believe there is a lot going on in the world and a lot of people trying to make sense of it. I wish to be above it, too enlightened or too woke. But we must be clear as to what do these words even mean. Well, the answers are once again diverse, numerous, and almost unending. Death comes to us all, but a dynamic life is arguably worth dying for. The truth is there is a glass with water in it, and the rest, well, that really just depends on you!

Distractions

What is a distraction? How complex this word must be? As a young person with a dream, everyone will tell you to stay focused and avoid distractions. We will start with focus: If one has a dream to be a professional athlete then focus on your sport, skill, and craft. The focus would be for the individual to constantly find ways to improve their abilities at their sport. Mind and Bodywork would be beneficial, you would certainly want to study your sport, the greats at your position, etc. Focus means the individual must learn and put in the time as the famous quote goes “The master has failed more times than the student has tried. “

Thus far staying focus seems simple enough, do the things that will help you become as good as you can be. The complex part is that anything outside of that classification can be labeled a distraction. Let’s talk about the more dangerous distractions. Let us analyze a young man who dreams of playing in the NBA. For the most part, anything he does outside of training and studying the game could be considered a distraction. I would tell this young man to stay away from the distractions of Drugs/Alcohol, TV/social media, and troublemaking of all sorts, all varieties (stealing, fighting, etc.). Why are these distractions so dangerous to our young man with a dream? Well, drugs and alcohol will slow his progress; they can change his brain chemistry and make him unable to make good choices. The rest are just time spent away from training and positive things, they are not inherently as negative as drugs and alcohol but the habit of wasting too much time will make our young man fall short of his best.

Our young man who strives to be a professional basketball player is back. He is a bit older and much different, of course, he still wishes to be a professional athlete, but the desire has been pushed down and covered up by new desires. The young man had ignored the warnings and he began to constantly engage in the three no-no distractions. His drug and alcohol use has changed his brain chemistry and now in the absence of drugs or alcohol, he is unaware of why he feels unhappy unsatisfied, and empty. His hours of daily television watching have given him a false sense of what he should look, act, dress, and behave like to be loved and liked. Of course, these characters and their lives are fictional, yet our young man judges himself by these standards. Soon he realizes he is not quite like the TV character, and this makes him feel like he is not enough. Finally, his hours of social media give him friends online but chat rooms cant fill his void of Loneliness. He also starts getting into trouble making of different varieties with his friends. Stealing, destroying property, and vandalism start to become fun to him. He continues to grow up, he is fifteen now and over the years he has had less and less time to think about his dream of being a professional athlete. It is safe to say our young man has become DISTRACTED!
