When "Average Joe's" Aren't So Average
And two ways to leave the "average world" behind…
"You stop being average the day you decide to become a champion because the average person won't make that decision." Tom Hopkins
If I read another article or post about how "if this average Joe can make it, then so can you," I'm gonna run to my 2nd-floor window and scream at the top of my lungs.
Look.
It's a lie.
Average Joe's (and Joan's) are not average.
They're anything but average.
They never were average and would instead jump into the flames of Mordor before having to live a life of average.
We just want it more.
There comes the point in every writer's career (or whatever career you're in) where they're forced to ask themselves: "Am I just another average Joe with a pen?"
The answer is no.
So, what does that mean? It means you're not just a cog in the machine; you are your own entity with your own set of skills and talents.
So keep reading; we're about to become enlightened into why most folks who FEEL average actually are anything but average.
Yeah.
I said we're...as in WE. Us.
I'm in that club of UN-Average Joe's too.
Just like you.
Been a fuggin card-carrying member for as long as I can remember.
For instance, let's talk about writing since we're all here in a place where people read and, uhm, write—a lot. And look, if you're not a writer, simply swap out the "writer" part to whatever side hustle you're currently gigging on. Dog walker…editor…CBD startup…etc…
There are lotsa folks who give you listicles on what to do, or what not to do. You know what I mean. The over-abused "5 Steps To Make Money As A _______" or how about the "From Zero to Hero As A _________ in 30 Days". Again, fill in the blank with your gig.
You've seen them.
You've read them.
You've likely made notes on them.
Those three acts alone set you head and shoulders above the herd of all the crybabies on Flakebook and other social profiles lamenting how life's dealt them a crappy hand…or COVID made me do it…or some Trump'd up conspiracy siphoned it all away.
But back to the 3 nuggets above. These are sound AF nugs of advice. I couldn't have typed it better myself.
But you know where successful Joes separate from Average Joes/Joans?
They do the damn work.
They take it to the next level, read the articles, make their scribbles and hi-lights, reach out to the authors or creators, roll up their sleeves, and get to work.
They go…do…be…act…without hesitation, even knowing that someone or even groups of someones will laugh and laugh hard at them for even THINKING, they could achieve success.
Average Joes never start.
They hope and dream. But they never start. They attack ideas with thoughtful consideration, go to sleep full of hope, and then wake up and blame "reality" or the 9-5 they gotta trudge through.
They'll probably do this several times.
They might even throw in a little hope and prayer, but as you all know, hope and praying is not a strategy for success.
Work is.
Getting dirty.
So look. Lemme just spill the moral of this story from a very successful Joe (yes, me).
You are already an above-average Joe.
You know how I know?
Because you read this far.
So take the following two steps to leave the world of average Joes' ville in the rearview mirror, sucking in your dust.
Step 1: decide, right this moment, that you're going to take massive action…
Step 2: stop scrolling and go take that first step…
“Push yourself to do more. Do not accept a life of average. Work hard, train hard, and be the best that you can be.” Anonymous
That's it.
Let's roll.
Successful Joe's unite.
Thank you for the gift of your attention,
