Huawei P70 will have an optical fingerprint sensor in the display, according to supply chain sources

Written by Soumyakanti – October 11, 2023

Despite past setbacks caused by US measures, Huawei is celebrating its comeback in the smartphone market with the Mate 60 series. This resurgence is mainly due to the use of the domestically developed Kirin 9000S chipset with 5G capabilities, highlighting Huawei's efforts to reduce dependence on US chip suppliers. However, Huawei's growth prospects could face challenges due to potential policy changes in the US, including tighter export controls for key chip manufacturing equipment and AI chips.

Huawei Mate60 component prices have increased by 15-30%. Despite the hurdles, Huawei's Mate 60 series has recorded strong sales and further strengthened its presence in the smartphone market. However, the surge in demand has driven up the prices of key components, especially the under-screen optical fingerprint module essential to Mate 60 devices. The prices of these components have increased by 15-30%. The main suppliers of these chips for the Mate 60 series are Goodix, GigaDevice (Siliwei), and Weier Technology (Jihao Technology).

The Huawei P70, scheduled to launch in 2024, is expected to retain the under-screen optical fingerprint technology used in the Mate 60 series, according to supply chain sources. Additionally, it is likely to be powered by the already reported Kirin 9000S chipset.

Huawei aims to double its smartphone exports to 60 million to 70 million units in 2024. To meet demand, the company is prioritizing the purchase of optical fingerprint modules, but high demand is driving up prices. Huawei appears to be actively building inventory in preparation for the smooth launch and distribution of its flagship product, the P70.

Huawei faced challenges last month as a series of large orders from partners strained the availability of key components and affected production rates. However, Huawei remains committed to its ambitious goal of shipping 60 million to 70 million smartphones next year, and the P70 is expected to play a central role in the company's strategy. It also plans to cut ties with Qualcomm and use only its own Kirin processors in new models starting in 2024. Related:
