Stop Being Perfect

Taking Control of Your Life and Your Career

By Francis MilliganPublished 8 years ago 3 min read

Over the years I wish someone told me what I'm about to tell you. I started businesses, and they failed. I started jobs, and I failed. I tried to start a content career online, and guess what? I failed. If I had this advice below back then, you wouldn't be seeing this post. Here's what I learned.

Stop trying to be perfect, it won't happen. Stop trying to please everyone, it won't happen. Stop trying to tackle everything at once, it won't happen. Stop pretending to be winning whilst you're sinking quickly. Stop procrastinating and then complaining you're getting nowhere. Stop blaming others, take 100 percent responsibility for everything in your life.

In this world, there are too many "perfectionists" and they're built through fear. Fear of being judged for their loss, fear of not winning 24/7, fear of not being accepted, fear of being left behind or a fear of not looking good on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. Never let fear of losing triumph the chance of success.

Perfection does not exist. If you believe you're perfect you're lying to yourself and everyone around you. Stop that right now.

We live in a world where your perceived value is way more appreciated than your tangible value. There are far too many wannabes trying to live the flash social media dream, and it's just all bullshit. Those folks who you see showing their latest handbag, or their latest watch, that new car they bought, it's just noise that'll distract from the real grind. Would you rather fake it until you make it or grind until you find?

This whole "fake it until you make it" attitude helps no one and will never help you. Watch Gary Vaynerchuk. He can put this a little more bluntly.

What really matters when trying to make it is speed, losing, learning from mistakes, staying humble, and just doing what you want to do. Never feel the need to change who you are, what you are, or what you do to become "perfect" or so you're not judged. Don't feel any need to ingratiate yourself with anyone who doesn't have the ability to understand or show interest in what you are doing or anyone who doesn't have an interest of their own. Do what you wanna do, do your own thing, and do it in your own fucking time at your own pace.

Learn from the mistakes and accept them as yours. That moment you step up and understand that you're in the driving seat is the moment you finally realise what you have to do to make it work and be happy. There are only a small handful of people around you who will be truly helping. Other than those folk, it's all up to you!

The end goal for so many is to have a six-figure salary and either a huge or cool job title. Well, let me tell you, anyone who has completed the real goal of life does not give one fuck about your salary or your title.

The real end goal, my friends, is happiness. Once you understand that quality of life is much more important than being part of the top 30 under 30 or having the most followers on Instagram, your life will change forever.

Starting a business, becoming a creator, or going for a job that truly makes you happy should never be scary. Sit down, plan it out, and create some goals that you can measure along the way; remember, if you fail those goals, it's all part of the learning process. Once you have your plan in place, all you gotta do is go for it with no questions asked. Don't let others make you deviate from your plan. It's your life and you're responsible, not them.

Stop being perfect. Start being you.
