The word ‘confident’ seemed like a huge word to me when I was a kid and, to be honest with you, up to this day I’m still not sure what or who I was hiding from.

All I knew was that I didn’t have the courage to speak up or do things that I wanted to do. I was so caught up with constant fear that people might judge me or that I wouldn’t be good enough.

It hit to the point where I couldn’t take it anymore, it felt like I had zero confidence in myself and it bugged the heck out of me. It held me back from experience life to its fullest.

However, just like anything else in life, we tend to change what makes us uncomfortable. Over the years of doing these little things, my confidence went up.

Ever heard those people who say life is a little easier when you are confident? Yup, they are 100% right.

By being confident, you’ll make better decisions in life simply because you already know what do you want in life. Other people might tell you that your dreams are too big, or they start questioning if you are even in the right mind but you know yourself and you deserve it, so there’s no room for unnecessary doubts.

“Confidence is that feeling by which the mind embarks in great and honorable courses with a sure hope and trust in itself.”– Cicero

How to be more confident:

These little practices every day are the ones who have helped me level up my confidence over the years. It’s a slow and long process but very worth the try.

Read a book that motivates you

I highly recommend this one book by Jen Sincero “You are a Badass”. The superpower words inside the book have surely changed my life and many other people’s lives and not only that, but it can also change your mindset on how to value yourself better.

I love how she stated that we are all worth it and can accomplish any goals we set ourselves to achieve — no matter how big it seems.

Pick an exercise that fits your schedule

Exercising regularly is one of the best ways to boost your confidence. It will reduce your stress level and think more positively about life.

You’ll also become less insecure about your appearance because you know you always take care of your body.

Stop the negative-talk

The words you said to yourself on regular basis have more impact than you think. Making sure you are kind, not only to others but also to yourself is vital.

Though I myself admit it’s hard to say kind words when things are really rough but it’s best to put the effort not to judge ourselves. That way, we can avoid letting ourselves down with unnecessary negative thoughts.

Don’t gossip

Be it at work or over the phone, there’s nothing good that comes from the activity of gossiping. It might be tempting to do it, especially when you have certain friends to do so.

However, you need to understand that this is just going to waste your time, and rather than doing that, it’s better to focus on working on things that will move the needle in your life.

Pick a new skill to learn

This is a crucial thing to do in order for you to be more confident. By learning a new thing you’ll definitely gain a new skill and when the opportunities come in front of your door, you are ready to jump in and use the skill.

Not only that, by gaining new skills, you’ll also be able to teach others and be helpful.

Make time for yourself

Even just a couple of hours weekly, please do it. We get so many distractions in our life and sometimes it makes us lose our connection with ourselves.

By prioritizing to spend time with just yourself, you’ll stay in tune with who you are and it’s actually will help you interact better with people.

Talk about your goals more often

Not necessarily telling everyone, but confident people aren’t afraid of saying their big dreams out loud and having the mentality that they deserve it.

Of course, you need to back it up with your real constant actions.

Try something new now and then

Even trying small things now and then still count because it adds up to your experiences.

The easiest example of this is trying new meal recipes weekly and experiment with them as you go. Over time, you’ll become more confident in your cooking skill.

Own a gratitude journal

This is so far my most favorite way on how to work on improving my self-esteem. Writing down things that you have and be content with them is something that most people don’t do.

It’s understandable because we tend to focus on things that we don’t have yet and maybe we’ll feel content once we have it. But it works the other way around.

Once you have this habit of keeping a gratitude journal, you will no longer compare yourself with others and focus on the good things that happen in your life instead.

Set a small challenge for yourself

What about getting off Instagram for 30days? Or going for a full month without junk-food? Setting small challenges like this will help you gain more trust in yourself.

Aside from that, it'll be easier for you to do bigger challenges in the future because you are confident enough you can nail them.

Be more proactive

This is the time to stop hiding and be more proactive, be it at your work or schools. Try to speak up your opinions more often.

Sure, you might mess it up for the first time or even after a couple of times, but when you do it long enough, your confidence level will go up and you’ll become more comfortable in expressing your thoughts.

Try to help others as much as you can

Helping other people will definitely make your confidence level raise up. This is because the action itself makes you feel good and that you feel like you are contributing to society by being a helpful human being.

It doesn’t have to be big things, doing your best to be a good listener to someone is a good start.

Practice daily affirmation

We often give others compliments but never to ourselves, why? Because it feels weird? No, we deserve it too. Especially when life doesn’t go as we planned, it’s important to use the words of affirmation, so we still have hopes for the future.

So next time you feel down, try to say some powerful and nice words to yourself.

Pay attention to your wardrobe

While not everyone will agree on this, I still think it’s important to at least be aware of what you wear.

Good clothes do help you become more confident as long as you know which style makes you feel comfortable. Because when you look good outside, it’s easier to feel good on the inside too.

Stop comparing yourself with other’s journey

Lastly, don’t ever look at somebody’s else life and then think that you are a loser because you feel like you haven’t achieved as many big things as them.

This will also decrease your confidence level as you feel insecure about your own life. So you definitely don't want to do that.

Final Thoughts:

As someone who used to have really low self-esteem, I understand how hard it is to be confident where there are endless expectations from society. But I also found that the work I put over the years is very worth it.

It’s easier to navigate your life in the direction that you want because you know who you are and you are confident in the value that you bring to the world.
