A lawyer, leadership specialist, life coach, and author, Robin Sharma, the best-selling creator of works like ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’, ‘The 5 AM Club’ and ‘The Greatness Guide’, is heralded as the ‘Modern Day Monk’. A Canadian national, Sharma credits his Indian roots for his inclination towards spirituality and emotional coaching. His best-known work is ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’ series; this series took the world by storm and has received notable commendations from people all across the globe.

Life and Lessons

Robin was born in 1964 to Shiv and Shashi Sharma. He was just one year old when the family moved to Canada. They are of Indian descent. As for his studies, the Who Will Cry When I Die author attended the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University in Canada. He earned two degrees in law including his Masters. While he was an attorney at law, he quit his job. Sharma worked as a litigation lawyer until age 25, when he self-published MegaLiving (1994), a book on stress management and spirituality., after which he discovered his true passion for writing. His second book and the subsequent series, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari became a global rage, and after that, he never looked back. He is the founder and CEO of ‘Sharma Leadership International,’ a training company that conducts sessions and training programs for employees and managers of some of the top ‘Fortune 500’ companies in the world, with a single focus on “lead without a title.”

The author of Who Will Cry When I Die story, has also founded The Robin Sharma Foundation for Children (RSFC), a registered charitable foundation. The Foundation raises funds from around the world and donates them to children's causes.

Tryst with Books

His self-published MegaLiving (1994), a book on stress management and spirituality was his first book. The book received lukewarm reception initially, but later on climbed up the national bestsellers’ charts. The book deals with the philosophy of how the only barrier between you and your goals is your habits. It encompasses of a 30-day program, peppered with life changing secrets, which an individual can follow to manifest success and contentment.

He initially also self-published The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, which was then picked up for wider distribution by HarperCollins. The book became an international sensation. By 2013, over three million copies of the book had been sold, and it had been translated to 51 languages. It was one of India’s top 10 bestsellers for 2 years.

In 1999, Sharma published his next gem, ‘Who Will Cry When You Die.’ The book was inspired by a life lesson from his father, who quoted Rabindranath Tagore, one of the most prolific writers of India, saying, “Robin, when you were born, you cried while the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world cries, while you rejoice.” The book offers 101 simple solutions to bring back inner happiness and peace into one’s life, despite various challenges. The book is one of the seven books of ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’ franchise that the writer has written over the years. His other published works are ‘The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO’ published (2002), ‘The Greatness Guide: 101 Lessons for Making What's Good at Work and in Life Even Better’(2006), ‘The Greatness Guide Book 2: 101 More Insights to Get You to World Class’ (2008), ‘The Mastery Manual’ (2015), ‘Little Black Book for Stunning Success’ (2016), and ‘The 5AM Club’ (2018).

Awards and Accolades

In 2007, the Who Will Cry When I Die audio book creator, was named among the top five leadership gurus of the world in an independent survey conducted by ‘Speaking.com,’ ranking alongside Jack Welch, Jim Collins, and John Maxwell. In 2011, he was awarded the ‘Golden Gavel’ honor by ‘Toastmasters International.’ Sharma also holds the sixth position on the list of the ‘Global Gurus Top 30 Leadership Professionals’ of 2019. He has a huge social-media presence, and he reaches almost 600 million people every year through his podcasts, ‘YouTube’ videos, and ‘Facebook’ posts.
