Potatoes, Eggs & Coffee Beans

A daughter once confided in her father that she was having a terrible time and didn't know how she would survive. She was sick of constantly struggling and fighting. It appeared that as soon as one issue was resolved, another one appeared.

She was led into the kitchen by her chef father. He put three pots on high heat after filling them with water. He put potatoes in one pot, eggs in another, and ground coffee beans in a third after the three pots had started to boil.

Without speaking to his daughter, he then allowed them to sit and boil. The daughter wondered what he was doing as she groaned and waited expectantly.

After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He poured the potatoes into a bowl after removing them from the pot. After removing the eggs, he put them in a basin.

After that, he ladled out the coffee and poured it into a cup. He turned and questioned her. "Daughter, what observes?"

“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she immediately replied.

"Take a closer look and feel the potatoes," he instructed. When she did, she noticed they were mushy. After that, he asked her to crack an egg. She removed the shell and looked at the hard-boiled egg. He asked her to take a drink of the coffee at last. Her cheeks lit up with its delicious perfume.

"What does this mean, Father?" She enquired.

He went on to say that the boiling water was the same challenge that the potatoes, eggs, and coffee beans had to overcome.

All of them responded differently, though.

The potato entered the boiling water powerful, hard, and unyielding, but came out weak and tender.

Before being placed in the boiling water, the egg's liquid interior was shielded by a thin outer shell, making it delicate. The egg's interior then hardened.

The ground coffee beans, however, were different. They altered the water and produced something new after being exposed to the hot water.

What is your name, daughter? he inquired. How do you answer the door when hardship knocks? Which are you: a coffee bean, a potato, or an egg?

Moral: In life, things happen to us and around us, but what really important is what goes on inside of us.
