Light’s Keeper

How the Sentinel Welcomes the Day

By Kingsley EgekePublished about a year ago 3 min read

In the heart of a faraway land, there stood a tall lighthouse on the edge of a cliff, overlooking a vast and mysterious ocean. This was no ordinary lighthouse. Its light had a special glow, bright enough to guide lost ships and gentle enough to calm stormy seas. The villagers called it the "Light of Everwood," and they believed it was powered by magic.

The lighthouse had always been cared for by the Light’s Keeper, an important job passed down through generations. The current Keeper was a kind and curious boy named Finn, only ten years old, who had inherited the duty after his father’s passing. Though young, Finn took his responsibility seriously, knowing the safety of the village and ships depended on the light shining bright.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, a thick fog rolled in from the sea. Finn climbed the spiral stairs of the lighthouse, holding his lantern. His heart raced as the fog grew denser, wrapping itself around the tower like a dark, heavy blanket. It was a night unlike any other—eerily quiet, except for the soft, distant crash of waves.

When Finn reached the top, he hurried to light the great lantern of the lighthouse. But something was wrong. The light wouldn’t spark. He tried again and again, but the wick refused to catch the flame. Panic crept in. Without the light, ships would drift aimlessly, and the village could be in danger.

As Finn frantically tried to figure out what was wrong, he heard a faint voice. It seemed to come from the light itself. The voice was soft, like a whisper carried by the wind.

“You must seek the Heart of the Light,” it said. “The light’s power is fading. Only the Heart can save it.”

Finn’s eyes widened. The Heart of the Light? His father had told him stories of it—a magical stone hidden deep within the sea, said to be the source of the lighthouse’s glow. No one had ever seen it, and most thought it was just a legend. But now, with no other choice, Finn knew he had to try.

Taking a deep breath, Finn grabbed a small boat and rowed out into the foggy sea. The waves were gentle at first, but as he ventured farther, they grew restless, as though the ocean itself was worried. He rowed for what felt like hours, guided only by the faint glow from beneath the water.

At last, Finn reached a small island he had never seen before. It was covered in sparkling stones, each one glowing softly in the fog. At the center of the island stood a single pedestal, and atop it rested a shimmering stone—the Heart of the Light.

Finn approached it carefully, his heart pounding. As his fingers brushed the stone, a warm light engulfed him. He felt a surge of energy, as if the stone was alive, pulsing with the heartbeat of the ocean itself.

With the Heart in his hand, Finn raced back to the lighthouse. He climbed the stairs two at a time, determined to restore the light before it was too late. When he reached the top, he placed the Heart inside the great lantern. Immediately, the light burst to life, brighter and more beautiful than ever before. It cut through the fog like a golden ribbon, shining across the sea and sky

The villagers below cheered, and the ships found their way safely back to shore.

From that night on, Finn was known not just as the Keeper of the Light, but as the boy who saved it.
