In the silence of the night, under the cover of darkness, in the quiet that only belongs to the late hours, is when I do my best work. With the low hum of a space heater and the entrancing sounds of my favorite music, as my background noise, I settle into my chair and begin. My hope is to make this one just a little better than the last. Evoke a few more emotions and create something to make every reader ‘feel’ the story. I have one big fan and honestly, I never want to disappoint him. I know the stories touch everyone in a very different way. As I think they should. Some may give you the hope you have been searching for, while others are almost too relatable. My intent is to have you, the reader, not only read the words but feel them also. Feel them in your heart, visualize them in your mind, hear the words….BE the words. Put yourself into the story and hopefully gain something by the end of it. Whether it be strength or hope, happiness or love. Even if it is just a story that you can attach yourself to, be one with the story. Find something useful that will help on this journey called life.
I myself let my emotions go crazy when I write. I believe there is a story in everything and everyone I see. Some stories should be written and others are best left alone. Some stories are screaming to be written and others are quite content to stay in the shadows. I have grown to see the world around me in such a different way lately. So much so that I am constantly telling myself “There’s a story here.” If I look at it long enough...there usually is. There is nothing that surrounds us that doesn’t have a story. From the way my silly cat loves spankings, to the great friends I have made this year. Numbers, letters, shapes, colors, sounds, sights, smells, feelings and emotions. I see stories in all of them. So I write... you read and I feel satisfied and happy. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Sometimes it is very difficult to speak the words to someone. that you need to speak. So we write. We write to encourage or defend, to help or heal, to explain the otherwise unexplained, to express or impress and sadly yes, sometimes we write to hurt. To get a message across and be heard. To rid our minds and hearts of horrible experiences in order to heal ourselves. Oh yes, I write.
My ideal story (or poem) pulls you in, keeps you there, then ends with you begging for more. I said “ideal” that doesn’t mean I have written it yet. Maybe I have and just aren’t aware of it yet. You are the only one that knows that. If you can read it, then close your eyes and imagine it’s about you, and feel it deep inside of yourself, maybe it makes you cry or laugh, then mission accomplished for me. I evoked a response, good, bad or indifferent, still a response. I think that says I did something right. At least to me it does. It’s not always just words on a page. It’s thoughts linked with emotions. It’s expressionism to its fullest. It’s being open enough to be able to translate the thoughts and feelings, and put them into words for the world to read. It’s being okay knowing that everyone's a critic, and accepting that. It’s also knowing that in being honest, sometimes you readers also become your secret keepers. Through writing you can also become someone's best friend because they just ‘get you.’ A silent bond is formed.
So even if none of my future stories were read from this day on (which is kind of impossible), I would and will continue to write. For me it is my outlet, my sanity, my happy place. It puts things into perspective for me and makes me feel good about ME. So my advice would be to anyone reading this and also writing your own stories…keep on writing! Every chance you get, every spare moment that a thought surfaces, whenever you can. It is the best therapy I have ever had and find yourself that 1 true fan, the one who will tell you honestly how your work is without fear, who will always read your work as soon as it posts and absolutely adores you and your creations. THAT fan is sometimes all you need to raise you up enough to continue writing. Treasure your fan as I do mine and every once in a while dedicate a story or poem to them to show your appreciation. Because after all without writers, there would be no readers.
Much Love G.
