I was patiently waiting in line for a ride at the terminal when an Uber taxi pulled up. The first thing that caught my attention was the driver's impeccable appearance, gleaming with a brilliant shine. He was impeccably dressed in a crisply ironed black tie, shirt, and freshly pressed dark pants. With a swift leap, the Uber driver emerged and elegantly adjusted the vehicle, opening the rear passenger door for me.
Handing me a discreetly embossed card, he introduced himself, saying, "I'm Joe, your chauffeur. While I stow your luggage in the trunk, I invite you to peruse my commitment to exceptional after-sales service."
I was taken aback as I read the card once again. It read: Joe's Mission Statement:
"To empower my patrons:
• Reach their destination expeditiously
• In a safe and economically astute manner"
I found myself puzzled, particularly as I observed that the interior of the taxi mirrored the exterior—utterly pristine!
As he gracefully settled into the driver's seat, he inquired, "Would you care for some coffee? I have an assortment—traditional and Java blends."
With a playful smirk, I responded, "Thank you, I'll indulge in a milkshake."
His grin widened as he said, "Of course. I have a refrigerated selection including regular and Diet Coke, milkshakes, water, and orange juice."
Nearly taken aback, I managed, "A milkshake it is."
Delivering my chosen refreshment, Joe remarked, "If literary engagement appeals to you, I have The New York Times, The Daily Mail, and WiFi at your disposal."
As we smoothly pulled away, Joe presented me with another meticulously designed card, "These are the frequencies I tune in to, along with the genres they feature, in case you'd like to enjoy some radio."
And if that wasn't enough, Joe proceeded to inform me that the air conditioning was active, courteously checking if the temperature suited me.
He then proceeded to outline the optimal route for that particular day, suggesting points of interest. Alternatively, he offered me solitude to contemplate quietly if I so desired.
"Joe," I inquired, thoroughly amazed, "Do you consistently provide such extraordinary service to all your passengers?"
A grin adorned Joe's face in the rearview mirror. "Not always, to be honest. This approach has evolved over the past two years. In my initial five years of driving, I found myself echoing the complaints of other taxi drivers. Then, I encountered the concept of the POWER OF CHOICE."
The power of choice, he explained, lies in our ability to be a duck or a hawk.
"If you awaken each morning expecting a dismal day, you're likely to fulfill that prophecy. Cease the grumbling! Don't be a duck; become a hawk. Ducks quack and complain, but hawks soar above the fray."
"Those words struck me profoundly," Joe confided.
"They did the same for me. I recognized that I was incessantly quacking and griping. So, I resolved to shift my mindset and adopt the perspective of a hawk. I scrutinized other taxis and their drivers. The cabs were unkempt, the drivers were sullen, and the passengers were dissatisfied. Thus, I began implementing gradual changes, a few at a time. When my clients began to experience satisfaction and contentment from my service, I further refined my approach."
I commended Joe's transformation, declaring, "That's a resounding success."
"It certainly is," Joe replied. "In my first year as an Uber driver, I doubled my earnings from the preceding year. This year, I'm poised to quadruple it. My patrons now contact me directly for appointments through my mobile or leave messages."
Joe had made a pivotal choice. He had elected to silence his quacking and embrace soaring like a hawk.
