How to make people feel important

Build quality relationship with others

By Auguste ChiomaPublished 3 years ago 6 min read

1.LEARN TO ADDRESS PEOPLE BY THEIR NAMES.

Dale Carnegie will always say in his book Titled HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE... people really love to hear the sound of their own name, so say it out loud, personalize your conversation with it, and connect it with something good that they have done

People like it when you address them specifically by their names instead of referring to them randomly.

When you meet people for the first time, ask them their name and try to memorize it and make sure you get the right pronunciation. When you meet them again or in a phone call, call them by their name, it will make the person know that you have him at heart, in other words sending a signal to them saying that you value them and their company. This is one the surest and the simplest ways people feel important.

2.COMPLEMENT PEOPLE

Be honest in your compliments. Only say it if it’s true and if you mean it. People can sense insincerity from a mile away, so don’t insult them with platitudes and meaningless words. This point is so significant in making people feel important and it actually costs nothing but people neglect it. It will not cost anything to tell your fellow worker in the office..."hi James you look good in your outfit, oh this shoe looks good on you".

When your friend makes a new hair, don't just look and pass. Tell her how beautiful she is looking at the new hair, admire her when she buys new clothes. Because we are human, the temptation of jealousy might come in but try hard to ignore it and sincerely admire your friends to make them feel important and valued.

Compliment that chef that prepares nice meals for you. You can say something like...oh I thank you so much for that delicious meal, you are such a talented chef. I have been craving to have a taste of this particular meal (mention it) and today you do not only satisfy my hunger but make me feel fulfilled eating this meal.

The above words will remind him how important he is as well as his choice of profession.

3.APPRECIATE PEOPLE

Everyone wants to be appreciated, so if you appreciate someone, don’t keep it a secret, talk to them about it and it will probably interest them. Appreciate every good thing they do.

When we tell someone we admire something about them, it signals that we value who they are and the choices they have made, which tends to make people feel good.

Give them public credit for something they have helped with or done well. Talk to them about it, don't keep it to yourself, appreciate wholeheartedly.

Make sure that others are aware of their important contributions.

4.LISTEN

Listen to them when you can tell they are feeling down or need to get something off their chest.

Give them your undivided attention so that they know they are the priority to you right now, and that you care about what is on their mind.

Don't be quick to talk, make the other person feel like an expert. Listen to what they have to say. This attitude will make you more smarter as you will be open to learn more from the other person.

Nothing makes human beings feel more important than being listened to. How do you feel when you are talking and people are busy paying attention and concurring with what you are saying? I guess it makes you feel on top of the world right? That's the same way the other people feel when you give them a listening ear. How I wish you will learn to allow them to pour out their feelings without interruption.

Focus on what they have to say, make eye contact and nod in agreement with a smiling face, it will encourage them to keep talking. And as they talk, try to practice an active listening technique like restating what they have said in your own words to make them understand that you are fully engaging with them. It will make them know that you have their interest at heart and this act will make them feel valued.

5.ASK THEM QUESTIONS THAT CONCERNS THEM.

Try to ask them questions about themselves. Something like...how are you doing today? How is work going? How are your studies?. Demand to get a reply. If they reply negatively. Try to find out what the problems are. Encourage them with kind words that will inspire and motivate them to do better next time.

Ask them questions about their chosen career and encourage them to put in their best in improving to be best then help them find a path to develop their potential; suggest books to read, courses to take, and experiences that could help them grow.It will make them feel great and valued.

Try to know their likes and dislikes.

6.LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT THEM.

A simple text or comment can make a significant difference. You can actually remind them of past outings together. Text them and let them know how excited you feel whenever you remember the fun you had together. It will leave a signal that you actually remember them and that you appreciate their company.

Everyone likes to hear that someone has a thought of them. It reminds them that they have made a positive impact on someone's life.

Text them something like

Hi James I just thought of that beach trip we took last month, oh it was so fun, I hope you are doing well where you are. The goal is to make someone feel important and the above text will definitely pass the information across to the person who is already feeling valued.

7.BUY GIFTS FOR THEM.

Receiving a gift can make someone feel special and valued. Don't buy any kind of gift, try to find out what they are mostly in need of and give it to them. If your friend loves to read, you can consider buying an interesting novel or motivational books for them. It could be that they like snacks like chips. Get it for them, it might not cost you much and the deal is to make somebody feel important and special.

8.ENCOURAGE THEM TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES

If they do not take time for self-care, encourage them to do some.

Let them know that while they have responsibilities, their well-being should be their priority. It will interest them how caring you are and you have done all this without having to spend anything.

Some spend so much time taking care of others while they forget their own self so if you find out they are among such people encourage them to care for themselves and they will be grateful you tell them.

They do so much for others, they should be sure to take care of themselves too.

As an employer you can think of how to make your workers feel important. The more people feel special and capable, the more they will excel in what they do, and the more they will enjoy being part of the workplace.

If everyone, or even most people, took on this mentality, then people would be more willing to be part of the work environment.

Employees would feel that they matter and that their contributions are genuinely noticed and appreciated.

They would feel special, instead of just being a cog in the wheel.

It might even make them more open to brainstorming, asking for help, and help them be more innovative.

They are more willing to try things they may have been previously hesitant to do, as they feel supported.

There is so much we can do to make others feel important and special. Just be fair and sincere in your dealings with people.

You never can tell whom you have touched their lives by your kind gesture or whom you have made their lives worse by your rude attitude

When we help to make people feel special, we are bettering their world.

Many times, we do not know what is going on in someone’s life.

The kindnesses that we show them may mean the world to them and maybe the bright and shining spot they have.
