How to Express Yourself

Whether it's a personal or creative thing, we've got some advice.

Whether it's through painting or screaming your lungs out inside your garage, expressing yourself is important to you, me, and everyone around in this fragile society. It keeps us together in the worst of times and allows us to come apart in the best of times. Expressing yourself is a must for those that are emotionally pent up, confused, frustrated, and/ or feeling hopeless with any issue at any time. It's helped people come to terms with who they are as a person and it's helped them feel as if they're a better person.

I'm writing this right now to get rid of a massive headache and due to my love for writing. The headache is slowly fading away into each key stroke and the music of my spotify playlists customized for exactly these moments of writing, these moments of expressing myself. If a headache can be taken care of simply by me expressing myself then expressing yourself can make you feel amazing too. Here are some simple steps from me to you.

First, what do you want to do? How are you going to express yourself?

As I've said before, writing is what I love to do. I mean, it's the only way you're reading this, after all. Writing is what I do, from these articles to poetry, writing helps. So what we need to figure out for you is what you want to do with your spare time. Even if it's only for a minute a week, you should have some form of expression to help you release whatever negative stuff gunking up your mind. Think of a passion you want to undertake and then simply go after it. It's as simple as that. If you want to draw but you think your drawings are terrible, go after it and become the next amateur Picasso or Van Gogh! If you want to sing, but you sound like a donkey kicking a car stereo while simultaneously being electrocuted by thunder, go after it and become the next Michael Jackson! You get the point. You need to have a secret desire or a passion or hobby that you want to do freely and without any restrictions from society, friends, or family.

Even if you do not know what your passion is, try everything including the things that seem outlandish to you. I was lucky to have writing as my passion but who knows about you, dear reader? Maybe your passion is parachuting into cereal factories or running down hills after rolling cans. I don't know what your passion is but just by reading this sentence, I've wished you luck and I firmly believe you can do it.

Second, improve how you express yourself to the point of immense satisfaction.

I stated before that it doesn't matter if you're good at what your passion is; however, after time passes, you should improve your craft. Artists learn what their style is, singers learn pitch and rhythm, etc. Becoming good at whatever passion you decide to go after will fill you up with self confidence and that much needed status of feeling like you are an unique individual who is the only person on this huge massive blue dot of the universe who can do what you can do. There's a reason why Van Gogh or Picasso are remembered as they are. It's because they crafted their passion into something immensely satisfying for both themselves and others. I am not saying to commercialize your passion for profit, I am saying make your passion into something you can be proud of. The one thing in your entire life that you can be unashamed of. So much so that you will defend it against the scrutiny of whoever finds issue. If you are immensely satisfied with what you do, then you can scream at whoever dissents ridiculous things that make you feel important.

"YEAH I MASTERED THE ART OF TAMING SQUIRRELS."

"YEAH I TRY TO RUN FASTER THAN LEAVES FALLING."

"YEAH I TAKE BLOOD STAINS AND I MAKE IT INTO MURALS ON MY WALLS."

These things, while ridiculous do not garner any shame to those proud of those statements. Why would the squirrel tamer give a single thought to those who thinks that he or she is weird? They tame squirrels, they don't care for the dissent that may come at times.

That's about it. In order to express yourself, you just need to find your passion and have the courage to not care what others think of you. Be proud of your passion and improve your skill in it as the passion or hobby improves your mental health, your headspace, if you will. If you'd like advice on what your passion should be, email me at [email protected] and I'll gladly try to help you. Thank you for reading and have a nice night or good morning.
