How I Made My First Online Income

How I Made My First Online Income

By Rana MiaPublished 9 months ago 4 min read

It was a quiet afternoon, and I was sitting in my small rented room, thinking deeply. Like many Bangladeshi students, I was in my second year of college and constantly worried about money. My family wasn’t financially stable, and I hated asking my parents for every little expense. I had a burning desire to earn my own money somewhere in my soul. Even if it was a small amount—I wanted to feel independent.

I'd read a lot of online accounts about people making money from freelance work, blogging, affiliate marketing, and other avenues. At first, I thought most of it was fake. But curiosity got the best of me. I started watching videos on YouTube about “How to make money online.” I tried to comprehend the online world and spent days watching videos and taking notes. One word kept coming up again and again—Fiverr. A freelancing platform where anyone from anywhere could offer their services and earn. I became ecstatic. I immediately signed up on Fiverr and started exploring. But then I realized something important—I had no skills.

That was my first reality check.

Instead of feeling hopeless, I decided to learn something simple. I came across a tool called Canva, a free online graphic design platform. It seemed easy to use, even for beginners. I chose to focus on making YouTube thumbnails because they were in demand and didn’t require advanced design knowledge.

For one week straight, I watched tutorial videos, practiced designs, and tried to improve. Every day after college, I would come home, open Canva, and create 4-5 sample thumbnails. Slowly, I started getting better.

After gaining some confidence, I went back to Fiverr and created a gig titled: “I will create eye-catching YouTube thumbnails using Canva.” I added a description, included my sample work, and hit publish.

After that... I waited.

One day passed. Next, a week. Next, two weeks. No commands. Nothing.

I won’t lie—I was disappointed. I had expected magic. But nothing happened. At one point, I even thought about giving up. But something inside me said, “No. Try a little more.”

I began to research how other new freelancers were getting clients. That’s when I discovered something powerful—Facebook groups. I joined a variety of groups for freelancers, digital marketers, and YouTubers. I noticed that many people posted there asking for services like thumbnails, logos, banners, and editing.

One day, a small YouTuber posted: “Looking for someone to design a thumbnail for my next video. Budget: $2.” The end of it. My golden chance. I immediately messaged him, showed him three of my best designs, and introduced myself politely. He liked my work and replied, “Send me your Fiverr link. Let’s do it.”

I was over the moon. I can clearly recall that night, when I barely slept. I was finally getting my first paid project.

I completed the design within two hours, sent it to him, and he loved it. He left a brief message, "Great work," and a 5-star review. Will order once more. My first online income: $2.

Now to many people, $2 is nothing. But for me, that $2 was everything. It was evidence that online earning was real. It was the beginning of my journey. That $2 gave me the confidence I needed to move forward.

After that, I continued promoting my gig in Facebook groups. Gradually, I started getting more orders. Some clients even gave me bulk projects. I learned how to communicate better, how to deliver on time, and how to improve my skills further.

Within the first month, I had completed 6 orders and earned about $25. I reinvested some of that money to buy a better mouse and internet package, which helped me work faster and more efficiently.

As time went on, I expanded my services. I started learning Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to offer more advanced designs. I created new gigs for logo design, banner design, and social media posts.

From just designing thumbnails for $2, I gradually started getting $5, $10, and even $20 orders. I built long-term relationships with some clients. Some of them recommended me to others, and that’s how my client base grew.

I also began to understand how important soft skills are—like communication, patience, and customer support. I treated every client with respect, no matter how small the order was. I ensured their complete satisfaction. I now work with clients from Instagram direct messages, Facebook pages, and even email referrals in addition to Fiverr clients. My income has increased, and so has my confidence. I’ve even helped a few of my friends get started in freelancing.

But no matter how far I go, I will never forget that first $2. I still have a screenshot of that payment saved on my phone. I look at that screenshot and remind myself, "This is where it all began," whenever I feel down or unmotivated. So if you’re reading this and thinking, “Can I really earn money online?” my answer is YES.

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need to have money to invest. Only a willingness to learn, some patience, and a lot of consistency are required. Start small. Pick one skill. Practice it. Promote it. Improve it.

Your first income may be small, but it will open the doors to something big. Trust me—I’ve lived it.
