When I first started writing on Vocal, I had no idea what to expect. As someone who started writing music reviews and sharing them on Twitter, I figured I’d at least make a little extra cash doing something I already enjoy. To my surprise, I ended my first month with $90 in tips, and I’m excited to share how it all happened—and what I learned along the way.

Getting Started on Vocal

When I joined Vocal, I had one main goal: to share my passion for music with a wider audience and Vocal felt like the perfect platform to build a more structured way of doing that. Plus, the idea of earning tips directly from readers was definitely a bonus.

Having A Niche: Why It Matters

One of the key things that helped me grow on Vocal was knowing my niche. For me, it’s music reviews. I noticed early on that when I wrote about a specific artist—someone my followers love—I got more engagement and tips.

Having a niche gave my readers a reason to come back. Whether it’s reviews, personal stories, or expert advice, people love consistency. In my case, I have followers who specifically want to read reviews about certain artists, and by focusing on those, I’ve built a small, but loyal, audience that’s willing to support me.If you’re just starting on Vocal, my advice is to figure out what your niche is.

The Power of Passion: Loving What I Do

Loving music is what made people connect with my reviews on a deeper level. When you truly enjoy what you write about, it shows, and your readers can feel that passion in every word. It’s not just about technical details; i share in detail the emotions that a song or album stirs up in me. This kind of genuine connection resonates with people, and it’s why so many of my followers return to read more. If you want to build an audience that sticks around and supports you, you’ve got to love what you do.

How My Tips Started Rolling In

After about two week, I received my first tip which was $20 and honestly, I was shocked. Someone had actually appreciated my review enough to leave me a tip, and that was such a motivating moment. It validated what I was doing and encouraged me to keep going. Over the course of the month, I continued to share my stories on twitter where I had a decent following of fellow music lovers, so I figured it was the best way to drive traffic to my Vocal posts.

By the end of my first month, I had earned $90 tips in total . It may not sound like a lot to some people, but as a new Vocal creator, it’s a big win.

What Could Have Made It Even Better

As great as this first month was, I couldn’t help but feel like I could’ve earned more if Vocal allowed more flexible tipping options. Right now, Vocal only lets people tip using Stripe, which is fine if you’re a creator because most of us are familiar with it. But a lot of people who read my reviews don’t write on Vocal, and they don’t have Stripe accounts. If Vocal offered tipping through PayPal, Cash App, or even Apple Pay, I’m sure more of my readers would’ve tipped.

I had a couple of people reach out to me on Twitter saying they loved my reviews and wanted to support me but didn’t have Stripe, so they couldn’t tip. One of my readers that reached out to me ended up tipping me $50 on PayPal.This is something that I think Vocal should definitely consider—adding more common payment options would make it easier for creators like me to earn more tips, especially from readers who are outside the platform.

What I Learned

Here are a few things I learned in my first month on Vocal that helped me hit that $70 mark:

  1. Consistency is key: I made sure to publish regularly and keep my readers engaged. Every new review was another opportunity for someone to leave a tip.
  2. Having a niche: Focusing on a specific topic helps build a loyal audience. For me, it’s music reviews. My followers are interested in reading about certain artists, so I stick to that niche and consistently deliver content they enjoy.
  3. Sharing on social media: Vocal is a great platform, but you need to drive traffic to your stories. Sharing on Twitter was a game-changer for me, especially because I already had a small following interested in music reviews.

My Future on Vocal

Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep writing and growing on Vocal. While $90 was a great start, I know I can increase that by continuing to improve my writing, reaching new audiences, and staying consistent. Plus, I’m hoping Vocal eventually expands their tipping options so more people can support creators without the hassle of signing up for Stripe.

If you’re thinking about starting on Vocal or already are but looking to boost your earnings, my advice is simple: write about what you’re passionate about, share your stories on platforms where your audience is, and keep engaging with readers. The tips will come.

Final Thoughts

Making $90 in my first month on Vocal was a big confidence boost and showed me the potential of the platform. If Vocal can make tipping more accessible, I’m sure many creators—myself included—could see even bigger earnings. For now, I’ll keep doing what I love, and who knows? Maybe next month, I’ll double those tips.
