Going Against the Grain

Most of us do it

By Cheryl A Nocera Published about 12 hours ago 3 min read

All of my life I felt like a was going against the grain. Family, friends, and collegues say one thing I do the other. Even now I still do not quite align with anyone. I am constantly being told, you do not do that, that is not how it is done, or why would you do that. The truth is I am not sure why. It took me all of my childhood, and most of my adult life to figure out I am very different. I work with energy and feelings more than the norm.

In my teens and early twenties I would show my writings to my mother, and the only thing I ever got from was you mispelled something and that is not proper grammer. I felt broken. My mother was a professional woman who was a VP at the bank, and then management. She knew best. When I went back to college in my thirties I was go to be a writer, but then changed to being an educator. I was an educator for twenty years, and now I do writing on the side, and work in a customer service field full-time.

I am writing this becuase I would like others to know you might look up to someone, but it does not mean their goals align with yours. This is OK. This does not make them wrong, and it does not make you wrong. Some people actually look outside the box, and want different things. As you get older you know what you want. The unfortunate thing is if you wait too long you might lose out. My family will tell you I have the worst voice in the world, and I should be embarrassed singing in front of others. I heard this all of my life. This is not true. I do have a great voice. However, my life never really aligned for me to get out there an sing. I worked two or three jobs most of life with no days off if any. The only time I ever got off was if I was sick and Christmas for many years. I even worked Saturday and Sunday. Now I am older and I still play guitar, keyboard, and sing. However, getting out there and performing I cannot do anymore. My dreams was killed.

Getting back to the point I am making. If you have a dream you want to pursue never look to anyone to validate it. Only look to yourself. Only you can put this forward. I am speaking from experience. Not everyone is creative, not everyone wants to be what you want to be or understand it. So make sure if you want something you go grab it. Do not wait. Most people do not get opportunities that magically come down and make things happen. So go out and get your dream.

If you are like me an go against the grain you will find what you wanted always aligned with you. It is not something you can make go away. That gut feeling you had pretty much all your life does not disappear. So just keep pushing your way through. You might not get it today. You might not get it tomorrow. But somewhere in your future you will feel the accomplishments of what you wanted.

By the way I published two books and one informational book, I have a talk show, podcast, write for vocal, and I have song on out there. So I am speaking from experience. You are amazing if you go against the grain. Follow your dreams and no one elses. I send positive energy from me to you.
