Freedom

What it means to me

By Lee NaylorPublished 6 years ago 4 min read

What does Freedom mean to you? To me it's the flag waving proudly next to my porch. My porch to the home where I bought a few years back. Freedom is working hard to get to a place, where my parents never got, no matter how many jobs they both worked. Freedom is showing pride in the work that we do, to get the things that we want.

Freedom is having ownership on a planet spinning through the universe, no matter how small that ownership may be. Freedom is celebrating Independence day, with my youngest child, the last for me to raise. The others moved away to have their own freedom, carry on tradition and build their own families lives. Freedom is living where ever you are happiest from sea to shining sea. Freedom should be afforded to us all, not just the USA.

Freedom is the picnics I had at the park, with grandma and parents. Brothers, and cousins, Aunts and Uncles. Fireworks blazing across the dark night skies, booming so loud I feel it in my hearts center. Jumping from the sheer greatness of the noise. The acrid smell of the fireworks caked inside my nose, the sound echoing in my ears and head. The "Ooooohs, and Ahhhhs" of a thousand unique voices.

Freedom is watermelon, burgers, chips and potato salad. It's cake decorated like a flag, sweet as the opportunities we all should have. Brownies, chocolaty and gooey enjoyed by one and all. It's sparklers and poppers and red, white and blue. It's being able to speak whatever is on my mind, and buying whatever I want at the store. Creating what gives me joy, and watching others light up as I share it with them. Freedom is making friends with everyone no matter their color, or beliefs. Freedom is knowing deep inside that we all deserve fresh air, fresh water, laughter, love and light.

Freedom is breathing fresh clean air, staring at the sky and watching the stars appear. Sitting in the moon light, pitching a tent in the great outdoors, roasting marsh mellows, watching and waiting for that shooting star. Telling ghost stories and wondering what else is out there. Campfires and tents and fireflies. Freedom is going wherever I want, no matter the time of day or night. Climbing in my car and hitting the highway no destination in place, just me the radio and sweet, sweet Freedom.

We take it for granted everyday. The air, the sun, the moon. We take each others kindness, love and happiness for granted as well. We are one. Free under the stars. In a Universe that knows no boundaries. Freedom knows no skin color, no religion, no monetary reward. Freedom is watching my flag blow in the wind, rippling it's stars and stripes of Red, White and Blue. Hitting against my bedroom window in the home I never thought I would own. Yet here I am, a home owner. USA. Earth.

I didn't start out alone, but things have a way of changing, whether we want it to or not. Our freedom is changing. We can see it, or we can choose to ignore. At the end of the day, will we wave our flag proudly, will we own our own piece of this earth, spinning wildly through the Universe? Will it all be taken away? It is our choice. Our Freedom for one and for all. We have the power to take it back, make it better than ever before. Imagine it, visualize it, realize it. Freedom for one and all. No lack of anything, love, happiness, peace.

Freedom to me, is watching a movie with my daughter from the tv in my own home. Working, playing, creating, growing, learning and breathing, in a place that is safe and real. Remembering memories from my youth, when things were fresh and new. The sky was blue and fresh, the food wasn't tainted with poison. Freedom to me is living, in peace, hope and love. Freedom is the same in each of our hearts. We need only realize the mistakes we've made, the love we've lost, the respect we threw away.

Freedom is sitting quietly in a field of wheat, listening to the birds sing, the earth making it's song of love, unity and peace. Freedom is what we were meant to have, what some have fought to keep. The earth sings a song, of love and Unity for all.

The world is not ours to harm, but to live here as one, nobody better than any other. Working together to find peace, happiness and most importantly love. Freedom is breathing without a mask, not needing guns, eating pure clean food to boost immunities to better serve us all. Freedom is living with no borders, walls, or limitations. Freedom is everyone having the same opportunities to learn and grow. The same opportunities to have a family, friends and a life we were meant to have. Freedom is creating the things we each have the ability to create. Respect. Love. Unity.

Freedom to me is a million stars in the sky. Planets so far away. The universe pulsing in tune to us all. Freedom is knowing tomorrow will come and you'll have another chance to smile. Freedom is the laughter of children and the great opportunity to watch them grow. Freedom is knowledge in a million different things. Writing books, painting, teaching, growing, working together to make a perfect world.

What is freedom to you? Is it singing the songs of your heart? Is it holding your loved ones close? Is it flying your flag from a post in your yard, the red, white and blue? Is it BBQing in your own back yard, with friends and family, laughing and talking nearby? Is it tucking your kids into bed at night and watching their sweet faces as the dreams come to take them away? Is it watching your child be born, holding your parents hand as they pass from this world to the next? Is it holding the love of your life so close, knowing they will still be there tomorrow?

Close your eyes, honestly ask yourself what Freedom means to you. Be honest and true, Freedom for one and all. Freedom for this planet we were born to live on. Choose what Freedom means to you.

What is freedom to you?

happiness
