Fly Ty — Ceo of Against Da Grain ENT/VP A&R Epic Records

By Jason James Published 5 years ago 3 min read

Ty Fly is a the Vice President of A&R for Epic Records. He’s also the CEO and founder of his own label called “Against The Grain Entertainment”. He’s using his knowledge and experience in the music industry to help and change artists lives. Worth several years of experience, he’s definitely on his way to being one of the biggest game changers in the music industry.

We sat down to talk with Ty below to learn more about him:

What do you feel separates you in the music industry?

I feel like what separates me from other executives is that I believe believe in the old way of doing things. I feel like that’s what the music industry is missing currently. There is no gut feeling about talent any more. Most executives go off of analytics and views. The last two artist I signed never even had a record out. It was based off of my gut feeling and their respective talents. If the music industry reverts back to the old way of doing things I believe it will breath a fresh breath of air into the music industry.

What else would you like to be known for?

I want to be known as a person who refused to let my past dictate my future. I made a lot of bad decisions in my life but I’m also a walking testament of if you dedicate Your life to changing for the better the cards will always align in your favor. So if I had to speak about accomplishments, I accomplished a lot in the ten years I’ve been home but I also have so much more to accomplish and two being making both my artist Philmon Lee and Jamie Ray. I also want to make my company Against Da Grain one of the biggest music labels in the business.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself running one of the majors in the next five years. I see my company against Da grain being a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. I also see myself just creating opportunities for other entrepreneurs and young execs as others opened the door for me. I feel like I have a moral obligation to help as many people as I can. I also see myself being more active in at risk communities in the next 5 years with the ultimate goal of deterring somebody from making the same poor decisions that I did at 17 years old.

What do you bring to the music industry?

I bring a lot to the music industry. I bring my true self. I bring the tenacity to win in every situation that I am a part of. I bring honesty to the music industry. I’m not the exec that’s gonna tell you your music is fire if it’s not actually fire. I’m gonna be the one to tell you go back to the lab and come harder. I always push all my artists to their fullest potential. I feel like we need more leaders and less yes men in this industry. I just want to instill the feeling back into the music industry.

What type of legacy do you want to leave behind?

This is a good one. I want my legacy to be based off of me being who I am. I’m honest, I have morals, principles and integrity. I love hard and I have a big heart. I made a lot of horrible decisions in my life some that caused me to spend half my life in prison. I never let that make me numb or I never let it defeat me. Instead I used it as motivation to want more and to do more because I always felt like everyone had a head start on me so I always felt the needed to work 10 times harder.
