Dealing with Creative Blocks and How to Get Your Writing On

I love to write. It's something that has come naturally since I was younger. Now my spelling is shit, and I can't say my grammar is perfect, but when you enjoy getting the thoughts out of your head it really doesn't matter (well maybe not that people are reading it, but whatever judge if you must). I never really had a "writing style" or a niche. Usually it was just random words that came to my mind that I needed to get out or made up lyrics to songs that had already been written. I'm the type of person that would rather text then speak over the phone, because when put on the spot, I freeze or say something stupid or wrong. When I write it comes out naturally, like I'm not even thinking and that my fingers just type (shout out to technology because my handwriting isn't any better then my spelling). For the last few years I've walked away from writing, besides the occasional thing for work or text messages. The last few months have not been easy-breezy for me and I found my desire to write come back, but this time was different. I had all these ideas in my head, ideas that I wanted to get out, that would wake me up in the middle of the night, but when I would go to write nothing came out. I would stare at the blank page, blank word document and nothing. It was like my brain forgot how to form sentences, like I couldn't get anything out. This went on for weeks. I felt like I was losing my mind, any time I did feel motivated to write, I would get easily distracted, instagram, work emails, oooo shiny object. If your feeling "blocked" like me, take a look at these steps that helped me get my writing on...

1. MOVE!

Yoga, running, boxing, walk the dogs, ANYTHING. By simply moving around you are releasing any built up stress, tension, and anything else that may be blocking your creative mind. Exercise releases endorphins that boost your mood, make you smile, and help clear your mind!

Yoga is one of my favorite ways to clear my mind, raise my vibrations, and I find my feeling more creative and happy afterwards! Check out Yoga by Adriene on youtube for fun, easy Yoga flows.

2. Put away the technology

We are always so connected to all of our devices. As I am sitting here I have an Ipad, my cell phone, my work phone, and I'm writing on a laptop. (This may seem excessive but I'm working from home so I am constantly plugged in.) By distancing yourself from your thousands of apps, notifications, and social media you can connect with your inner thoughts, creativity and are less likely to get distracted by every beep, ringtone or email notification.

3. Stop judging yourself!

If we judged everything we wrote, we would never write again. You are never going to be perfect, it's not possible so let it go! Not everyone is going to gush and love everything you put out there. If anyone reads this I'd be surprised (happily!), and you know what? If no one does. THAT'S OKAY! I wrote this for me. It is the first time I have been able to sit down and get ideas out in months! This writing is for me, and your writing should be for you as well! I am not saying I don't want to help others through my words, but if I'm not writing for myself that the words will never come out to help others.

4. Read, read, read

During this quarantine I have fallen back in love with reading as well as writing. Reading other people's work has helped me be able to redevelop my own written word. Everyone has a different style and exploring these can help you discover your own style. I've spent a lot of my time reading self discovery books, spiritual books, and books written by life coaches who share my ideals.

5. Write about something you LOVE

Don't make it work. This isn't school. You don't need to force yourself to write about world war 1 (unless that interests you then go for it!). It is easier to get into a "flow" when you are enjoying what you are doing. Find your passion, your niche, your love and share it with the world!

I hope this helps you break out of your writing block, and get back to being creative!
