Can every one become an Achiever?

By Saba RamPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Set Goals, Plan actions, Execute the activities….You reach your goals.

But its not that simple and doesn’t work each year every year despite the new year resolutions.

What is the problem? What is missing? Is it lack of motivation, Passion, Perseverance. Is there a guide to complete the motivation ?

nAch

It simply means your nAch is low or missing…….Wait…wait … is it any vitamin deficiency?

According to McClelland's (1987) theory, for achieving, the need for achievement should be present in the individual and can be measured as nAch, score. It means to achive success you should have “the need to achieve” within you. If that need is absent however much you try hard you will not achieve.

But how do you know that whether nAch is built into your cells, and if so how much? Can it me measured?

McCleland says “Yes”. He says if your nAch score is low you can even improve and inculcate it . Sounds like vitamin Tablet? But it is true as found in his various research studies and experiments.

Write a Story

Let us see how? Look at the picture on the top and write a 10 line story in 4 minutes.

For writing the story, you may like to think about, who is the person? What happened in the past? What is being done now? What is being contemplated? What will happen? These questions need not be just answered, but will help you only to build the story with continuity. But do write before you proceed forward.

After writing the story read it aloud and review it .

The story could be one, like this.

A man is retuning to his hometown and looking for the warmth of his place as he is away from family for sometime. He thinks of all the issues and problems that would engulf him as soon as he lands. He is spredaing himself thin on all the issues of his office, family and his finance. He is worried about his personal debt and contemplating on mortgaging his property.

Good story and good imagination.

There could be various stories on a wide range of settings and backgrounds. Certainly its your creativity and projection of your mind which matters.

Thematic Apperception Test

This is called TAT ( Thematic Apperception Test) a widely used instrument as a projective test for the assessment of sub conscious mind of any person. This was developed by Henry A. Murray and Christina D. Morgan, while working at Harvard University. Many

Psychologists can then reveal parts of a your personality based on the story you have presented. The TAT utilizes open-ended questions to reveal aspects of a person's personality by presenting a neutral picture, without any suggestions on the plot. What is uppermost and dominant in your mind is projected through the characters in your story. The entire story will spool and uncover over one central theme in his major life events. The potentials of you can be understood.

To score the TAT, you analyze each of the subject's stories based on the following aspects:

Content of the story — This may reveal your attitudes, beliefs, expectations, inner conflicts, and views on the world.

Emotional tone of the story — Emotions such as sadness, fear, anger, happiness, or anxiety can provide a clue about you with insight.

If you are narrating the story aloud — your Changes in voice, poor eye contact, fidgeting, pausing, and hesitancy might reveal more about your attitudes and dispositions towards your life.

Sample Story

Read the below sample story.

He is an entrepreneur, flying to meet his partners for business development. He is confident of signing the agreement. Looking at the sky he imagines if it was signed how his business would reach new heights. He feels the pleasure of anticipating that positive feeling. His mind is also working a B plan , just incase if it fails as he thinks how frustrated and down he will be ? He thinks to contact the next business associate.

In the sample story you can see the elements of the writer’s

Goal setting, Actions, Goal Positive, Goal Negative, Feelings Positive, Feelings negative, Seeking Help, Growth mind set and finally the central or core theme of achieving.

The writers mind is so much internalized and his DNA is impregnated with the need for Achievement ( nAch). So he is a sure candidate for achieving success.

So You Can also Win.

The upside of the story is according to McClelland, these traits can be learned and practiced and the whole society can be achieving society.

It’s a good pointer that schools can adopt this TAT exercise and train the students to write many stories with the the above deliberate elements so that their n Ach score will be high when they start their life.

Many studies have validated Robert McClelland's Theory. So You can also Win.
