An Effective Leader

Essential Characteristics of Leadership

By BigSteff SAPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

What exactly can be considered as effective leadership? What must a leader exhibit or possess? We have good examples of leaders in history that will never be forgotten, because of the kind of characteristics they had, which made them stand out. They brought on board amazing instances of leadership, which have been well-noted. The essential characteristics are what I am going to cover in the paragraphs following my introduction. As a leader, you must possess certain qualities that are unique and unmatched by the average individual.

One of the essential characteristics of an effective leader is good communication skills. One must be very communicative. You’re constantly interacting with people and so must be ever ready to communicate. People always expect to hear from you, your point of view and what lines of action you plan on taking. You must be consistently relaying information to the public. They’re keen on having you communicate to them, whether it’s by speeches, a forum where you answer people’s questions, or through public service announcements. You must speak to the masses and not lack communication at any point in time during your leadership role.

Another essential characteristic of an effective leader is being objective. You must be all about objectivity. You should be focused on goals you have set to get done as a leader. A leader must have a sense of direction, and be able to make known his intentions or agenda. Being a leader means you are responsible for how things are run, that everything is in order and goes in accordance with your motive. Exhibiting objectivity is crucial to being a good leader, because you must not be influenced by personal feelings or sentiments; you must not be subjective. A leader should be neutral, in a sense, with his or her goals or mission and accomplish it.

There are shinning examples of leaders in history that have possessed these qualities. The likes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mendela, among many others possessed these characteristics. They demonstrated what effective leaders’ capabilities can be. Character can be groomed or learned as you grow. It’s not really something you’re born with, although it could come naturally for some people. You must take what life has taught about good leaderships and apply in your life. It takes time to become second nature, but eventually will. No one is perfect, even great leaders in the world today make mistakes.

What also is an essential characteristic of an effective leader is being a good listener. You must listen attentively to what people tell you and take it into consideration. You must be able to listen to people to share their ideas, when questioned, which you must answer to the best of your knowledge and would only be able to do so by listening attentively, and deal with people’s constructive criticism. As a leader, people will criticize you and let you know how you’re doing as a leader, and what you need to work on. They will also let you know what’s expected of you in terms of leadership in meeting the needs of the people. You must make a conscious effort as a leader to listen to the people, accept in good faith what they tell you, and be ready to make adjustments to whatever pertains to your leadership role. In order to be an effective leader, you must hear people out; listen.

I have given my essential characteristics of an effective leader. I feel that these qualities that I have pinpointed are what make an effective leader. To be an effective leader, you must be a good listener, a good communicator and be objective. Every leader that has been remembered and cherished in history exhitibted such characteristics. It’s not easy to be a leader, so the individual who has chosen this leadership role must be commended on even venturing into it.
