As a writer, I know how hard it is to handle criticism. We writers have to handle criticism as a part of our job.

Not just writers, everyone has to handle criticism at some stage of their life. No matter you are a musician, painter, music director, or anyone you need to learn how to handle criticism. Sometimes, it’s hard to handle.

Criticism is something you can easily avoid by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” ~Aristotle

Sometimes, we become so defensive when it comes to criticism. Let people talk about you, you just need to listen.

If you don’t know how to handle criticism and embrace it. Here are the five ways to handle criticism like a pro.

5 ways to handle criticism

1. Use criticism for self-growth

I know it’s hard to take an honest look at yourself and your weaknesses, but do it to make your weaknesses your strengths.

Criticism allows you to improve. Use criticism as a tool to improve your work.

No one can grow without trying. Criticism will let you know where you are lacking in abilities. Listen to it and improve it.

Don’t take it personally. Your critics give you an opportunity to improve. So, why not take it. Take this opportunity and do your best because rest will take care of.

Don’t waste your time in replying to your critics, use that time to improve your abilities.

2. Be grateful for your critique

Thank every person who offers you meaningful feedback, for they want you to succeed. Although it may hurt to know what you did wrong, understand their motives, and thank them.

Let your critiques know that you appreciate them for reading your work and leaving feedback to improve your work. After all, your critiques spent their valuable time on your piece.

Gratitude makes you happy and confident to work towards your weaknesses.

3. Don’t be too harsh on yourself

No matter, you received constructive feedback or destructive feedback appreciated yourself for doing hard work.

Be kind to yourself for whatever you have done because there is always room for improvement.

Don’t tell yourself you can’t do it. Give yourself positive self-talk because this is the only way to not feel bad about yourself.

Tell yourself that someone else's suggestions and thoughts don’t define who you are and what you do.

Relax and treat yourself because you did it without the fear of being judged and criticized.

4. It’s okay to feel bad

Let your feelings come out. Don’t suppress your feelings inside your heart. It’s inevitable to feel angry or hurt.

Just be yourself. Therefore, speak up or write your feelings; however, let them out creatively and move on.

5. Enjoy the fun of failure and move on

No matter what you do, failures will be there. You paint, you write, you make music, there are always failures waiting for you. So, why not enjoy them?

I remind myself to enjoy the fun of failure, to try to re-frame failure and criticism as part of the fun. Otherwise, my dread of criticism can paralyze me.

When you put your ideas out there, no matter in any co-operate business meeting or online, there will be people who don’t like what you like.

Not everyone is going to be nice. So, enjoy the fun because success is waiting for you. Therefore, move on as fast as you can to meet the success.

More than criticism, your inner thoughts affect how you feel and behave.

Be positive and do self-talk. That’s the only way to overcome criticism.

You will encounter many criticisms in the future. Don’t be panic, just make your inner self ready to not overthink.

No one is perfect. We all are perfectly imperfect. So, relax and enjoy life.
