10 Interesting Facts About the Subconscious Mind

Modern neuroscience has taught us that the conscious experience of our waking lives is only a small fraction of the total experience of reality.

The subconscious mind is the part of your brain that handles all the non conscious and unconscious functions, such as memory. It does not have an initially accessible conscious state and cannot be directly influenced by your thoughts or actions. When you are awake, you are responsible for all the thoughts that come to mind; however, when certain regions in your brain sleep you would experience this state as a dream, the subconscious becomes dominant and can lead to some unique findings.

The following 10 interesting facts will help you better understand how this part of your mind is functioning while you are asleep. Interesting facts about our subconscious:

1) The subconscious mind controls your actions without you even knowing it:

When you are asleep and dreaming, your subconscious mind is in full-control of your actions. For example, if someone jumps on a bed in a dream, you will experience the reaction of physically jumping on the bed as well. Your body thinks that the movement is real and helps to create the dream environment.

Other movements such as screaming or laughing can also occur during this time. The brain has no idea that these emotions aren’t real all it knows is that it has to act according to your commands and make them come true. This is why you can sometimes wake up and find yourself in a different room than you initially fell asleep in.

2) The subconscious mind has a big impact on your decisions:

While you are awake, your ability to make decisions is almost always based on the conscious mind. This part of your brain essentially exists to provide information and to help you make choices that will affect your life. However, this doesn’t necessarily hold true when you fall asleep. Your subconscious mind has a direct influence on what you believe and how you feel, which directly affects your decisions as well.

For example, if someone yells at you while you are dreaming, the feelings associated with this experience will lead to waking up scared. If someone yells at you while you are awake, you are likely to get upset or angry. The same situation leads to different emotions and reactions, simply because you are in a different state of consciousness.

3) The subconscious can be triggered by external stimuli:

At the end of life, the subconscious mind is still very much present. It can trigger memories from the past, which results in what is known as a near death experience. A near death experience usually occurs when a patient is on the verge of death and is experiencing brain activity at the time of physical death. This can cause consciousness to linger into that final moment, and even after.

For example, patients might report being able to see the doctor in the room and even having conversations with him or her. This is very uncommon when a patient is not near death. In most cases, if brain activity has stopped, the patient can only experience darkness and unconsciousness.

4) The subconscious mind has a huge influence over your daily life:

Your subconscious mind has a huge influence over all areas of your life, including your body and what you feel. It tells you whether or not something feels right and even impacts how you interact with others. For example, when someone smiles at you in person, your brain automatically knows to smile back at them because it’s generally considered polite. While you are awake, this same phenomenon works in reverse.

You know that feeling when you remember that your sense of smell can bring back memories of certain people or objects? Your subconscious mind is responsible for that as well. It has a direct connection with the past and can trigger memories associated with these people or things, so it’s possible to catch emotions from a previous experience and feel something very similar to it.

5) The subconscious can cause injuries:

While the conscious mind is responsible for making sure your body functions correctly, your subconscious mind has a big impact over this as well. For example, if you cut your finger while you are awake and feel pain, it will be your conscious mind that makes decisions about whether or not to feel that pain.

However, when you are asleep and dreaming, the subconscious takes over and sends signals to that part of your body to hurt in order to create a dream environment. This is why people have sometimes woke up from a dream with injuries on their body after falling asleep with this type of injury.

6) The subconscious can affect how others see you:

Your conscious mind is responsible for everything around you; however, the subconscious mind is able to make decisions that can change how others see you. For example, if you feel like someone is judging you, that person’s change of behavior could be caused by the fact that your subconscious mind is picking up on their thoughts.

In fact, this phenomenon has been observed many times with patients who have brain injuries and become paralyzed when they wake up. Their conscious mind can no longer control the body, but they can walk while they are asleep. This could be caused by the non conscious mind assuming control and relaying messages to the muscles that allow movement.

7) The subconscious is more powerful than the conscious:

While it might not seem like it at first, your subconscious plays a huge role in who you are and what happens to you as a person. Just because your conscious mind can think of things like having a baby or getting married, the subconscious mind has thoughts about these things too and is capable of influencing them without realizing it.

For example, you might have an unconscious desire to start your own business; the subconscious mind is the one that will make you start it. You need to look into hypnosis if you want to get a better understanding of this concept and see how much your subconscious mind influences what happens in your life.

8) The subconscious can influence people’s behavior:

The subconscious also has an influence over other people’s actions as well. For example, if you have a friend who does something that’s hurtful to you, your subconscious mind could be responsible for why they did that. This is because it receives messages from your consciousness and can alter how you act in order to protect yourself. Even otherwise innocent people can be affected by the subconscious as well; they might cause harm because they want to hurt someone else or show them up.

9) The subconscious can control how other people see you:

Even though the conscious mind has a major influence on how others see you, it’s not always easy to detect this influence. In fact, your non conscious mind can have an even greater influence on this than your conscious mind. This makes it incredibly difficult to have any type of control over how other people perceive you.

For instance, if you are obese, people will automatically assume that something is wrong with you or that you don’t take care of yourself. However, the subconscious mind might be the cause because it’s sending them signals like this person is not very healthy.

10) The subconscious can give you superhuman strength:

A person’s subconscious mind is powerful enough to make them lift large objects when they are asleep and having a dream about doing so. For example, one woman had a dream that she was lifting weights at the gym when she was asleep. When she awoke, she actually felt as if her arms were stronger than they had ever been and was able to pick up an object that most people would struggle to lift. This phenomenon has been observed many times with people who have quadriplegia and medical conditions that affect movement like coma, stroke and brain damage.

In Conclusion

The subconscious mind has some very intriguing characteristics. While the conscious mind is responsible for making you do things like drive a car and go to work, your subconscious takes over and can control your body without you being aware of what’s going on. This means that your body works automatically, even if it does so by accident. It is actually capable of taking over when the conscious mind is disabled, which can cause people to think or act in strange ways. Your subconscious mind also has an influence over how others see you and can change their behavior as a result.
