The First Step of a Crazy Journey

Leaving comfort behind to chase something real.

By Jog Journeys - HealthPublished 7 months ago 3 min read

I used to be the kind of guy who played it safe. Same routine every day, sitting under the cold lights of an office that felt smaller by the minute. Then one morning, I looked in the mirror and asked myself, “Is this really all there is?” That day, I did something crazy—maybe the craziest thing I’ve ever done. This is the story of my first step, and I hope you’ll walk with me on this journey.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Monday morning, 7:30 AM. My coffee had gone cold. The screen in front of me was filled with Excel spreadsheets, and I was just... blank. I’d worked as an accountant for over ten years. The pay was decent. The people were nice. But every day felt like hitting the replay button. Like I was slowly disappearing inside a box, and every breath I took made my dreams a little smaller.

I used to love running. Those quiet morning runs, when the world was still asleep—that used to be my way of finding myself. But life got busy. The pressure to be “responsible,” to settle down, to be “a grown man,” slowly pushed that part of me away. My running shoes got shoved into a dusty corner, and so did my freedom.

Until that morning.

I don’t know exactly what changed. Maybe it was the tired eyes staring back at me in the mirror. Maybe it was the 6 AM email from my boss. Or maybe my heart had just had enough of staying quiet.

I wrote my resignation in five shaky minutes. My hands were sweating, my heart pounding like crazy. I felt like a kid stealing candy for the first time. But deep down, it wasn’t fear—it was the first time in years I actually felt alive.

Nobody really understood. “Are you nuts?” “You’re quitting your job at your age?” “You think running’s gonna pay the bills?” I don’t blame them. I barely understood it myself. But some decisions don’t need to make sense. You just know if you don’t do it now, you might never do it.

I started over with an old pair of shoes, a little bit of savings, and a heart full of cracks. I ran—not to break records, but to piece myself back together. Every step was a deep breath. Every mile was a reminder that I was still here. I didn’t know where I was going. But I knew one thing for sure: I wasn’t going back to that box.

If you’re standing at a crossroads, heart pounding, feet frozen—I just want to say this: The first step is always the hardest. But it’s also the only one you need to take to start. The rest, life will teach you along the way.

I don’t have all the answers. But I have this story. And it started the day I chose to stop pretending and start living.

So what about you?

Are you ready to take that first crazy step?

So here I am, still running—not just on roads, but through fears, doubts, and all the “what ifs” I used to let hold me back. I’m not chasing a finish line anymore. I’m chasing something real. If you’re standing where I once stood, wondering if you should take that first crazy step—do it. It won’t be easy. But nothing worth doing ever is. The truth is, you don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start. One step. One breath. One moment of courage. That’s where everything changes.

I get it. I was stuck in a rut too. Quitting my job was scary, but it led to a whole new adventure.
