Love, Family, and the Choice That Changed Everything

A true story about love, family pressure, and a decision that changed two lives.

By DuaPublished about 4 hours ago 4 min read

I never believed that a simple family wedding could change my life forever. What started as a normal day surrounded by cousins, laughter, and celebrations slowly turned into a story of love, conflict, and difficult choices. I never expected that the person I once called my childhood crime partner would one day become the reason for the biggest emotional battle of my life — a battle between my heart and my family.

After finishing my intermediate, I couldn’t get admission to any university. I had applied to only one university, but unfortunately the entrance test was on the same day as my cousin’s wedding. Because of the wedding, I missed the test. Since I hadn’t applied anywhere else, I had no choice but to take a gap year.

During that gap year, something unexpected happened in my life.

At my cousin’s sister’s wedding, he suddenly proposed to me.

I was completely shocked. For me, he was always just my cousin, my friend, and my childhood crime partner. I had never looked at him that way before, so I refused him.

But after that proposal, things slowly started to change.

Before that day, we barely chatted like this. But after the proposal, we began talking more often. Our conversations started with simple things — family issues, daily problems, and the usual gossip after family gatherings.

We would message each other things like,

“Did you see what she said today?”

or

“Did you notice how he was looking at us?”

Slowly, those small conversations became a daily habit.

Without realizing it, I became attached to him.

There was another complication in my life. Since childhood, my marriage had already been fixed with another cousin, but I was never interested in that relationship. Eventually, I ended it.

Six months later, he asked me again if I would consider being with him.

Once again, I refused. I wasn’t sure about my feelings, and I knew there were many conflicts between our families. Our mothers didn’t get along, and my mother never liked him.

But life has a strange way of changing hearts.

While explaining to him again and again why it wouldn’t work, I slowly realized something — I had started liking him too.

Three months later, after thinking about everything very carefully, I finally said yes.

That moment was one of the happiest moments for both of us.

To celebrate, we played a small game.

“I love Facebook.”

“I love Instagram.”

And then finally he said,

“I love you.”

We both laughed, but at the same time we were incredibly happy.

For a whole year, things continued like this. Since we were cousins, we often met at family gatherings and knew almost everything about each other’s lives.

But one night, everything changed.

I was talking to him and accidentally fell asleep. The next morning, my mother read all our chats.

She was extremely angry.

I tried everything to convince her. For almost a week, I barely ate, hoping she would understand my feelings.

But instead, she gave me a choice.

“Choose one — either him or us. If you want to marry him, then never come back to me again. And if he ever hurts you, don’t expect me to support you.”

She believed he was a playboy and that he was not serious about me.

Eventually, we realized that going against our parents would only create more pain. So we made a difficult decision.

We stopped talking and decided to focus on our careers.

He joined his father’s shop and started working there. I got admission to a university and also started working as a part-time teaching assistant at a welfare institute where I taught MERN stack development.

Life moved on.

Then one day, I saw him in the market during the Eid rush. He was standing at a stall selling bangles and helping girls wear them.

Seeing him like that made me unexpectedly angry.

That night, I messaged him to clear everything.

But while talking to him, my anger slowly disappeared again.

And somehow, we found our way back to each other once more.

Time passed. We both became more focused on our careers. His father retired, and he started managing the shop alone. I completed multiple internships and am now close to graduating.

But fate still wasn’t done testing us.

One day, my aunt found out from her younger son that he still liked me and wanted to marry me. She told my mother everything.

My mother became angry again and checked my phone, but she couldn’t find anything.

The next day, when everyone met, she asked him directly why he kept mentioning my name if we weren’t even talking.

But he said exactly what I had already told her — that nothing was going on.

For a moment, it seemed like everything was under control.

But later that same day, because of family tensions and misunderstandings, another conflict happened between us.

Now he is upset with me, and I am upset with him.

We don’t talk the way we used to anymore. Sometimes we message each other if something is important, but that’s all.

Now everything depends on him.

If he decides to talk to his father and make things official, maybe everything can still work out.

Because if that misunderstanding had never happened, we were actually planning to get married this September.

But now…

Our future is uncertain.

And our story is still waiting for its ending.

Sometimes love doesn’t end because feelings disappear. Sometimes it pauses because life becomes too complicated. Maybe one day everything will finally fall into place, and maybe it won’t. But one thing I know for sure — some people never truly leave your heart, no matter how far life takes you. And maybe our story is not over yet… it’s just waiting for the right ending.
