A Long Distance Love Story

A Love Letter Sent with the Sunrise

By Tahir khanPublished 9 months ago 4 min read

Every morning, before the world around her even stirred, Mia’s phone would buzz softly beside her pillow. It was her favorite part of the day. Even before opening her eyes fully, she would smile, knowing exactly who the message was from.

“Good morning, sunshine. I hope your dreams were filled with happiness. I miss you.”

It was always something sweet like that. Every message was like a soft hug through the screen. For the past eight months, these good morning texts had become a part of her life. They were her comfort, her joy, and her reminder that love could travel across time zones and distance.

Mia lived in a small town in Canada, while Liam was in Australia, chasing his dream of becoming a marine biologist. They had met online through a book club forum. It started with shared comments about their favorite novels, then moved to private messages, video calls, and slowly turned into something more than just friendship.

At first, neither of them planned on falling in love. They were just two people who liked talking to each other. But conversations that began with book reviews turned into late-night confessions, laughter, and comfort. And before they even realized it, they were in love.

Long-distance relationships were never easy. Mia missed holding Liam’s hand, seeing his smile without the screen, or simply sitting beside him in silence. Some days were harder than others. There were times when the time difference made them miss each other’s messages. There were days when they wanted nothing more than a hug, but all they had was a voice note or a video call.

But Liam always said, “Even the sunrise has to wait through the night. And still, it shows up every morning, just like I will, no matter how far we are.”

That became their little saying. Whenever the distance felt too heavy, Mia would whisper it to herself and smile.

One morning, Mia sat on the porch of her house with a warm mug of coffee. The sky was slowly changing color. Soft oranges and pinks danced across the clouds. Her phone buzzed.

“Look at that sky. It’s almost like it’s carrying a message for you. Good morning, love. You’re always on my mind.”

She replied, “It’s beautiful here. Like it’s whispering your name with every ray of light.”

They talked through texts for a while before Liam had to go to his classes. Mia looked at the sky again and whispered, “I wish you were here.”

Later that evening, Mia opened her journal. She often wrote letters to Liam there—letters she never sent, but ones that helped her feel closer to him. She wrote about her day, about her feelings, and about the future she dreamed of with him.

“Dear Liam,

Today, I saw a little boy running through the park, holding his dad’s hand. I couldn’t help but imagine us, someday, maybe, with a little one of our own. You always say I dream too much. But dreaming of you makes me happy. I miss you, but I believe in us. Always.”

She closed the journal with a soft smile and hugged it to her chest.

Weeks passed. Life kept moving, but their love stayed steady. They planned video dates, watched movies together while on call, cooked the same meals to feel closer, and sent each other small gifts. One day, Liam sent her a necklace with a tiny pendant shaped like the sun.

The note read, “To the girl who lights up my world, even when I’m on the other side of it.”

It was simple, but it meant everything.

Then came a surprise. Liam had a short break from school and decided to visit his family, who had moved to the U.S. recently. They weren’t too far from Mia’s town. He didn’t tell Mia right away. He wanted to surprise her.

One Saturday morning, Mia was sitting by her window, watching the sun rise like she always did. Her phone buzzed.

“Good morning, sunshine. I hope your day is as lovely as you are.”

She smiled and replied, “You always know how to make me smile. I miss you today more than usual.”

Just then, the doorbell rang. Confused, Mia went to open the door. And there he was—Liam, standing on her porch with the sunrise behind him.

She froze. Her heart raced. Tears filled her eyes.

He smiled and said, “Good morning, sunshine.”

Mia threw her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. He smelled like home, like comfort, like love.

“I can’t believe you’re here,” she whispered.

“I couldn’t stay away anymore. I wanted to see the sunrise with you,” he said, gently wiping a tear from her cheek.

That day, they didn’t go anywhere. They sat on the porch, watched the sky change colors, held hands, and talked about everything and nothing. For the first time in months, they didn’t need a screen or a good morning text.

He stayed for a week. Every moment was filled with laughter, warmth, and soft kisses. They cooked together, took walks, and watched the stars at night.

When it was time for him to leave again, it hurt. But it wasn’t the same kind of sadness anymore. It was softer, filled with hope.

As he boarded his plane, he texted her one last time before takeoff.

“The sunrise will whisper my love to you every morning. Just listen closely. I’ll be back soon.”

And Mia replied,

“I’ll wait for you, just like the sky waits for the sun.”

Even after he left, her mornings were still bright. Because love, real love, didn’t need to be in the same room to be felt. It just needed two hearts that kept choosing each other, again and again.

And every day, with every sunrise, their love whispered back to them:

“No matter the miles, no matter the time, I’m always with you.”
