One startling discovery that may lead to successful management of obesity

Scientists have uncovered how immune cells lead to obesity

It’s not hard to see just how prevalent obesity is in 2022.

Obesity has become a global epidemic, not only in adults but children.

People who suffer or are on the verge of obesity may develop diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

New developmental therapies will help tackle this ever-growing issue.

Obesity is very close to my heart due to my mother’s battle with weight gain, which eventually manifested into obesity.

She developed pancratic cancer — precisely due to her lifestyle and nutritional habits.

Although she was 83 at the time of death, I cannot help but contemplate just how much mum would have altered her destiny by making better choices with food and exercise —  given a chance.

It’s crucial to be well aware of this because, as human beings, we don’t like to change our habits.

It’s uncomfortable and challenging. But, it’s the one decision you make that can either give you back many more years of life or take it away from you through disease.

Researchers have identified checkpoint proteins and immune cells alter inflammatory cells within fat tissue, leading to obesity.

Modifications in the immune checkpoint proteins of mice on a highly refined “western diet” can be linked to significant reductions in the development of diabetes and obesity.

Professor Padraic Fallon and Dr Christian Schwartz led the scientific study.

Professor Fallon says, “ The checkpoint regulation of cells in visceral fat of obese individuals increases our understanding of how the immune system controls diet-induced weight gain, which eventually leads to conditions like obesity and type two diabetes.

This discovery has increased our scope on how we can address how obesity influences disease.

As shown in the Covid 19 epidemic, those who contracted the virus were likely to develop a severe illness that required intensive care and had an increased risk of mortality.”

Dr Schwartz says, “In our study, analysing the function of immune checkpoints on specific cells showed us that small changes in one of the many cell populations within fat had such a tremendous outcome of the disease.

Through this basic research, we were able to gain access to patients’ samples, linking the findings to human disease.

It will be fascinating to investigate how these checkpoints may be manipulated on specific cell populations to help people with obesity.”

Could this well and truly help those suffering from obesity to finally take control of their health with the simple tool of manipulation discovered by scientists?

Time will only tell, and more studies are currently underway.

In the meantime, you can apply specific lifestyle changes to diminish your chances of developing obesity and the many diseases that coincide with it.

These points can be applied to both adults and children, and it’s advantageous if used by the whole family to support one another in the quest to eliminate obesity.

Here’s a quick checkpoint you can start today

One: Eat healthy foods during meal times

Encourage children and adults to eat various fruits, vegetables and low caloric protein sources.

If the whole family begins to eat healthily, it will be less challenging to adapt it into a dynamic lifestyle habit.

Making one simple change per week, such as introducing a new type of vegetable or fruit into meals, will create small yet highly significant differences.

Two: Monitor both adults’ and children’s portion size

Although healthy food is a better option than your standard processed meals, watching your protein sizes is still important.

Use smaller plates and get into the habit of leaving the table 80% full rather than stuffed to the brim.

Three: Limit the unhealthy food in your home

Although it can be heartbreaking, throwing out all of your proceed junk food from the cupboard or fridge is the best place to start.

Allowing processed junk food to sit in full view encourages everyone to snack on the wrong choices.

Save the treats for very odd occasions, and do so sparingly, so it doesn’t encourage bingeing.

Four: Make it a priority to cook and prepare most meals at home

Getting take away one or two nights a week is probably a must in our busy world.

But, resorting to pizza and other junk regularly harm the health and wellbeing of you and your family.

Research some healthy meal options, bulk purchase produce and meal prep as much as you can on the weekends.

Although it’s a big ask, you will be rewarded with better health long term and the added bonus of weight loss.

These four steps are the fundamental essentials towards eliminating obesity and encouraging the family to work together as a team.

When you work as a union, encouraging one another to be the best versions of yourself, the journey will always become smoother.

Having someone to fall back on during those challenging times can make the most significant difference in your life.
