Muscle Pharm’s latest preworkout put me on blast today.

For the last year, I’ve been using preworkout supplements on and off, trying out a slew of whatever was in front of me. My supplement of choice, however, has been C4 Ultimate, as it gave me a solid, steady boost in energy and endurance.

You can imagine my heartbreak, then, when I went to the nearest supplement shop to restock and found C4 Ultimate was not in stock.

I paced before the shelves for so long the employees probably thought I was plotting to steal, my eyes scanning the many pretty, virile designs on the containers of all shapes and sizes.

C4’s original formula would have no effect on me. It provided a great buzz when I first started using preworkout, but my body had developed quite a tolerance. Similarly, I passed by a few brands I'd tried which may as well have been water flavoring to me.

Then a bright red “New Release” label caught my eye. Next to Muscle Pharm Assault (which I haven’t tried) sat a slick cylinder by the name of MP Wreckage. It was priced at $39.99, the same price as C4 Ultimate for a similar number of servings.

The only problem was that I had no idea how my body would react to it, and as there were no reviews online for the new release, I had no idea if I was about to get ripped off or not.

I took the risk.

I’ve been drinking Muscle Pharm’s protein shakes for a while now, and Muscle Pharm is a pretty reputable company, and the cute guy at the sales counter said the label looked good, and fuck it. My student loans were paid off for this month.

Initial Reaction

I drank my preworkout as I always do—the moment I arrived in the gym locker room. The first sip had quite a kick to it, and I literally shivered. (Yes, that is the proper use of the word ‘literally.’) The label directs users to mix the powder with 8-12 ounces of water, I used 12, and in the future I’ll be using 14. I do tend to prefer a more diluted taste, though, and anyone may have different tastes.

Also, I did have to visit the bathroom before I even changed into my gym clothes. This always happens to me when I’m using either a new preworkout or a new protein shake formula, and the poops go away after the first couple of times. (Does this happen to anyone else? I never asked.)

The Fun Stuff

After yanking on my shorts and tank top, I bolted out of the locker room and straight to the turf. It was my weekly abs and upper body session. Some background: As my abs are pretty weak and I need to build on them, and I don’t have much interest in gaining huge biceps, I train my abs first, and more intensely, in the session. I follow it up with some moderate upper body work.

The first thing I saw was that all the rowing machines, where I would normally do an easy warm-up, were taken. Had I been feeling more logical—and virtuous, perhaps—I would have either waited or warmed up some other way. I wasn’t. I was feeling my internal body heat rise along with my heart rate and I decided to get right into the workout.

So MP Wreckage makes you make stupid decisions. Here are its other effects.

  • Energy - I was pleased in this department. I had no urge to stand still and I breezed through my abs session. (That’s not true. They burned like hell doing bicycle crunches, but I survived.) I moved on to the weights section for my upper body session and was pleasantly surprised to be able to lift heavier, with the same amount of perceived exertion.
  • Endurance - I was, um, not displeased in terms of endurance. C4 Ultimate will typically keep me chugging for the entirety of a two-hour workout and past it. I felt Wreckage’s effects wearing off after about 90 minutes. However, I’d set my abs on fire and all but finished my upper body routine by then, and I do have some degree of personal drive, so I was able to finish the session strong.
  • Focus - Nothing is going to stop me from pausing between sets and checking out guys with their nice, sleek muscles, and ten percent body fat. I cannot fault a scoop of powder for that. That said, I didn’t feel the need to go on my phone or make small talk with the janitor, so it worked well enough.
  • Tingle - I actually felt no itchiness, which was a bit disappointing. It’s not that I want to scratch my eyes out, but I like some needling sensations in my fingertips. It makes me feel alive.

The risk paid off.

I’m pretty happy with MP Wreckage.

I harbor no illusions. I know I’m going to develop a tolerance to it within the next week or two, and that it won’t make me feel like skipping through the halls and high-fiving strangers. That doesn’t matter. It was fun while it lasted.

In the long run, all that matters is that it continues to be effective. I’m sure it will. Otherwise, I’ll update this in a considerably less happy mood.

Here’s to no negative reviews!

I failed.
