How To Stay Fit in College

Are you a college student looking to stay fit? Here are some tips you need.

By Paisley HansenPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

As you get ready to begin your college experience, you've probably heard harrowing tales of the "freshman 15" or the "sorority 40." While the college lifestyle can make it more difficult to stay fit and trim, it isn't impossible to do so. Here are some ways to help you stay in shape while still enjoying yourself.

Pay Attention to Your Diet

Eating healthy doesn't mean going hungry or eating only salad. You can enjoy your food, but just make sure you're getting balanced nutrition. That means you need to pay attention to what you eat so that you get enough fiber and protein, as well as carbs. Set yourself up for success by stocking your refrigerator with fruits and veggies that you enjoy snacking on, as well as cheap protein like nuts and eggs. If you're often eating on the go and need some extra energy, mix some protein powder into a smoothie for an easy, healthy, transportable breakfast. You can get some good deals on powders too, like this Power Life coupon code.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

In order to stay fit and healthy, it's important to drink water throughout the day. Not only will this help you counteract the consequences of your Saturday night out, but it will also help you focus better in class and give you more energy. If you struggle to drink water, try getting a bottle you'll enjoy drinking out of, whether that's because you like the look of it or because it filters your water for you. Set rules for yourself like no soda until you drink a whole bottle of water, or that you'll drink a glass of water with every meal. Small steps make a big difference.

Take Every Opportunity To Walk

Decide to walk as many places as possible. Yes, sleeping in an extra ten minutes and hopping in your car to head to class may sound lovely, but getting in the habit of walking around campus will keep you in better shape than you'd think. Between power walking so that you aren't late and lugging around a laptop and heavy books, you'll get a mini workout multiple times a day.

Build Workouts Into Your Schedule

Most colleges offer a plethora of opportunities to stay active, from discounted or free gym access to intramural sports. Decide when you are going to work out during the week, and then treat it like a class you can't miss. You can also commit to an exercise class or intramural sports team to keep yourself accountable. Getting into the habit is the hardest part, and then it's easier to stick with when it's a part of your normal routine.

Multitask During Your Workouts

Working out doesn't necessarily require time away from your studies. Try downloading the audio version of an assigned book so that you can listen while you lift, or bring notes to study while you're on the treadmill or stationary bike. Even if that means you can't go as hard as you normally would, at least you're moving instead of sitting at your desk all afternoon. Exercise can also help boost your comprehension and memory as well, so that's an added bonus.

Prioritize Sleep

College life isn't known for being conducive to sleeping well, but prioritizing a good night's rest is vital to staying healthy and keeping weight off. Even if you can't get a full eight hours every night, make sure your room is set up to make the most of what you do get. Hang some blackout curtains, purchase a white noise machine or get a mattress topper to help make that dorm mattress tolerable.

While staying fit in college can be difficult, it isn't impossible, and it's worth it. Making your health a priority will help you perform better in your classes, keep you from getting sick and give you more energy to enjoy all college has to offer.
